What have they (and other similar orgs) done that is controversial?

I have tried searching and can't find why they are rewarded poorly

Run training sessions for orgs (including schools & hospitals) that misrepresented medical science and the law.

Another thing to note about Mermaids an Stonewall, OP, is that they are misrepresenting the Cass Report as validating their policies, e.g. quicker access to affirming treatment for 'trans' children, like the really bad thing that happened at the Tavistock was the long waiting list..
They are misrepresenting past statements to make themselves look like the voice of reason - I think there are some posts elsewhere giving examples of statements from Mermaid which are the opposite of what they're saying now.
So they are being criticised not just for past actions, but for rewriting history.

Didn't read all the links, so maybe this was already mentioned in one of them, but Stonewall and Mermaids are the main drivers behind the erasure of the words women/girls and have encouraged the use of more trans-inclusive wording such as "chest-feeding", "ovary owner" "person with a vagina/vulva" and "bleeder".

middleof58 · 11/04/2024 19:14

Oh come on OP, you can't have tried 'searching' very hard...

If there was only one bunch of people I could send to prison for all the damage that's been done, it would be Stonewall and Mermaids.
Unelected activists that infested all of public services with their damaging dogma. Children, women, lesbians, and gays have paid the heavy price for someone else's virtue signalling.

heathspeedwell · 11/04/2024 19:34

Back in 2009 Mermaids used to be absolutely clear that the vast majority of children who were confused about their gender identity would grow out of it. They made it clear to parents that being confused about gender is a normal part of growing up for many children.

Then Susie Green took over and she was heavily influenced by some US extremists. She encouraged a new approach that made people think that anyone who questioned their gender must be immediately affirmed or else they would commit suicide. She also encouraged otherwise intelligent people to think that toxic puberty blockers were 'harmless and reversible'.

I don't know how many gay and autistic kids have been irreversibly damaged by this but I feel heartbroken for each and every one of them.

When you think you can't love her more 😀

Otter2 · 11/04/2024 21:09

She is just wonderful!

TrishTrix · 11/04/2024 21:17

Listen to the Nolan report podcast about Stonewall.

ArabellaScott · 11/04/2024 21:19

That Charity Commission investigation is taking its time, isn't it?

SidewaysOtter · 11/04/2024 21:51

Cotton ceiling, anyone?

For the uninitiated, this was a workshop run by someone who - IIRC - was associated with Stonewall and concerned itself with “overcoming” lesbians’ boundaries as to who they wanted to have sex with. I believe the TL;DR version was “Lesbians have to have sex with men who call themselves women else they’re bad people”.

Helleofabore · 11/04/2024 22:21

I’d also look up their now terminated trustee Breslow and his dodgy attitudes towards paedophiles. And their ex comms manager who that time as Breslow was discovered had a porn graphic published centring on that staff member’s staff/member.

And I would do an advanced search on Mumsnet for threads on Peter Tatchell who regularly speaks in support of stonewall on panels and media. Not sure he is still considered a spokesperson for them though.

Paging @Boiledbeetle for her Safe For Work edit of the Mermaids’ employee’s dick pic collage…

bad people. I think the exact term used was "sexual racists"

Search for those two words here and you can find many informative threads.

Let's see

Mermaids pushed the idea of only gender affirmation care.
Rather than calming and reassuring children and families, they were fearmongerers, constantly pushing the idea children were unsafe, were under attack, were at high risk of suicide etc.
Polly Carmichael was clear that Mermaids were pushing the Tavistock to medicalise children sooner and on demand.
Mermaids wanted to have a say in adult LGB communities and services, they shut one magazine or something down?
Mermaids were pushing Helen Webberley as a private prescription provider via Twitter and residentials
Mermaids residentials also mixed impressionable young children and older teens as "role models". The screenshot is from a transcript that was on the GenderGP website.
