FiLiA banned from Plaid Cymru Conference this weekend

BaronMunchausen · 22/03/2024 15:13

At the last minute. It seems that the women of FiLiA would endanger other conference delegates, as the reason given is "the need for our delegates from all backgrounds to feel as though the party conference is a safe space for them to express their identity comfortably". It seems the party lives in a topsy-turvy world where women are a threat to the safety of men. It clearly hasn't made much progress in detoxifying its culture of misogyny.

Is Wales not covered by the Forstater judgment? The Equality Act certainly applies there.

FFS, since when is it dangerous to hear opinions they don't agree with? If I hear 'safe space' one more time I'm going to scream...

SoupDragonsFriend · 22/03/2024 15:27

woman: scary adult human female

ArabellaScott · 22/03/2024 16:37

Outrageous. Shame on Plaid Cymru.

Runor · 22/03/2024 17:03

A need for all delegates to express their identity - unless they’re women obviously 🙄

WelshSerafina · 22/03/2024 17:53

Plaid are in a collaboration agreement with Welsh Labour. They are in thrall to gender ideology too. Supporters of self ID.
Scotland has rightly hit the headlines but increased attention really needs to be paid from the rest of the UK to what is happening in Wales.

Signalbox · 22/03/2024 17:59

I’m guessing a claim of discrimination not possible because there is no provision of service or employment. But IANAL so probably completely wrong.

Froodwithatowel · 22/03/2024 18:02

'All'. No. Not all.

This is a requirement that women don't express their identity or even attend if they are going to threaten the personal fantasies of a few male people. It is basic, fundamental sexism, that values male fantasy above female equality and reality.

There is no bullshit that will successfully hide that ridiculous mess.

Boiledbeetle · 22/03/2024 18:02

Wankers

fromorbit · 22/03/2024 18:20

This is an attempt to cover up the sex scandals within Plaid, their support for Labour's self ID for politicians plan and their failure to safeguard girls in Welsh schools. FiliA should sue, they legally are in the right and even if they don't get to go to this conference they get to go to the next one in autumn.

Brilliant response from Wales-Women’s Rights Network

When someone shows you who they are, believe them.

When @PlaidCymru’s values lead them to cancel a worldwide feminist group @FiLiAcharity’s stall at conference, what are their ‘values’ actually worth?

Values.
By way of reminder, this is the @Plaid_Cymru STILL embroiled in a misogyny and sexual harassment scandal.
Who don’t want women who defend other women at their conference.
As these women don’t prioritise men’s feelings.
‘Values’ didn’t prevent @Plaid_Cymru sending a new life peer to the Lords this week.
Even though they claim to want to dismantle it.
Presumably the presence of anyone with a different view there won’t make their life peer feel ‘unsafe’ enough not to take her seat.
#Plaid24
Values.
A @Plaid_Cymru MP who assaulted his wife had the whip returned.

A @Plaid_Cymru MS was not suspended until over a year had passed since these allegations were made.

Values.
The report into their misogyny, sexual harassment and bullying scandal was damning.
Do you actually think you’ve got to grips with this @RhunapIorwerth?

Cathy Larkman from WRN Wales said;
“This disgraceful decision by Plaid Cymru to cancel the conference FiLiA stall starkly demonstrates the disconnect between their warm words on women’s rights and the actual hard reality within the Party”.
#Plaid24

“We have spoken to several Party members who are deeply concerned and at the point of resignation.
The assertion that anyone would feel ‘unsafe’ in the presence of women who campaign for worldwide rights for women is derisory and contemptible”.

Every @Plaid_Cymru
member should be asking serious questions of their Party at conference.
How can this Party seriously claim to care about women’s rights?
@RhunapIorwerth

Women of Wales (and males who care) Plaid have shown you who they are - believe them.

Let's hope this will help break the silence inside Wales.

Damning report calls on Plaid Cymru to ‘detoxify’ culture of harassment

Victims said they felt little point in reporting incidents of sexual harassment, misogyny and bullying by elected members

Froodwithatowel · 22/03/2024 18:26

It's a very good point.

Someone who feels 'unsafe' about women having rights and equality needs a therapist, not indulgence.

duc748 · 22/03/2024 18:26

"We welcome robust debate..."

No, you bloody well don't. You appear to want women to STFU.

Would Shahrar Ali's recent case against the Green Party have any bearing?

EnfysPreseli · 22/03/2024 19:49

I think the contract for the conference exhibition space and associated passes constitutes provision of a service.

Plaid have also put their reason for withdrawing that service in writing, making assertions without any evidence apart from the hearsay of a tiny number of party activists (that they seem to be shit scared of).

Plaid are stuffed if FiLiA choose to pursue it. They need to stop ignoring this. It's not going to go away by pretending not to notice the outrage on twitter and digging an even bigger hole for themselves.

Wish the lily-livered Welsh media would start covering the story. Doesn't fill you with confidence about what they decide is newsworthy. Plaid Cymru has a woman problem and a damning report on misogyny in the Party has been published amid a load of waffle. Isn't that enough of a pattern for journalists to think maybe it's not women or FiLiA that are the problem, but the ingrained misogyny and oppressive culture of thought-policing rife within those running the party?

There are so many lifelong Plaid Cymu supporters who are furious about this. Women and men.

ArabellaScott · 22/03/2024 19:57

So men's identity and feelings are important. Women's feelings, rights, and issues are not just lesser, they are actively deemed contrary to the party values. Astonishing, really.

Froodwithatowel · 22/03/2024 20:04

I'm increasingly thinking the 'being shit scared' part of it is becoming increasingly obvious across the board.

I'm also thinking that The Freedom Programme could do with a massed roll out, and then immediately realised that programme would definitely be a prosecutable 'hate' for inciting boundaries inconvenient to male freedoms and dominance.

I mean fuck me, WPATH promotes castration for boys who identify as eunuchs! But thats fine, let them advise the NHS.

Women who campaign against FGM? Burn them.

Draigosaurus · 22/03/2024 20:13

FilLia are opposed to the sexual exploitation of women and girls.

FiLia are opposed to the reproductive exploitation of women and girls.

FiLia are opposed to violence against women and girls.

Plaid Cymru does not share FiLia’s values.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 22/03/2024 20:28

Unsafe?
Imagine thinking you are unsafe because someone might not affirm your 'identity'.

It's amazing isn't it, how middle aged women are now suddenly supposedly the most dangerous group known to man.

ArabellaScott · 22/03/2024 20:39

WTf was that deletion for? MN is getting more censorious lately.

I said Plaid Cymru prioritise men over women, that's the subject of the newspaper article upthread, on misogyny in Plaid Cymru. Is feminism banned in the feminist board altogether now? We women mustnt upset the men with our talking about sexism, FFS.

makeanddo · 22/03/2024 20:55

And here I am, on a Friday night, with my glass of red, completely unaware that I am indeed very very scary because I am a woman. After all I couldn't go and completely be myself because I'd only have to state facts and they'd hate me more than they do already. Anyway their loss!

EnfysPreseli · 23/03/2024 09:27

One of the saddest and most baffling things about the situation within Plaid Cymru is that some of the most enthusiastic TRA cheerleaders are women. Both Vichy feminists and vulnerable 'I'm not like those other girls' young women. The leadership pay too much attention to what a vociferous minority say will win votes and what policy positions are 'progressive'. A lot of this isn't on the older members' radar at all.

Welsh media are still ignoring this story. Beginning to feel the situation may be hopeless in Wales. It would have been better if we could avoid the catastrophe that is coming, but Plaid and Welsh Labour seem determined to destroy more lives. I've no faith in Welsh Tories either but at least their desire to bash Welsh Government has led to them waking up.

I know, it's so fucking pathetic, isn't it?

I think that FiLia most definitely have a legitimate case for claiming discrimination. Apart from allowing other groups, they approved it, then cancelled their place at the last minute and are discriminating against them for their legally protected understanding and belief in sex realism.

Olderbadger1 · 23/03/2024 17:10

It makes perfect sense ... Plaid state that FiLiA don't align with 'their values'. The recent report evidenced a culture of misogyny and sexism so extensive that the then leader was obliged to resign. One can only assume these are the values that Plaid are determined to uphold.
