I can't believe this. Women's Rights are never safe, see Roe and Wade. Hope to see marches in London if they repeal it.

I'm at the point now where if there is no way for the international community to enforce a worldwide ban on FGM and child marriage, we should refuse aid to countries that permit it.

WarriorN · 19/03/2024 13:00

That's horrific

RethinkingLife · 19/03/2024 13:51

Women's rights are rarely absolute, they're perceived as a gift on loan to us that can be withdrawn.

As with so many things, in many countries, the idea of women's inalienable rights is a social fiction.

FancyRat · 19/03/2024 13:56

Well this is disgusting.

If this was really about cultural and religious freedom, it wouldn't be done on unwilling children, , it would be grown women volunteering.

Seriously fucked up, and should definitely be illegal worldwide.

😭

They’re taking 3 months to have a wee think so there’s time to exert international pressure…

pickledandpuzzled · 19/03/2024 15:05

No!

Some specifics on impact of FGM in Gambia - specifically a 2022 paper on obstetric outcomes. (Basically, bad & worsening with severity mutilation. Not unexpected, but if you ever encounter someone who tries to tell you it can’t really be harmful or they wouldn’t do it…)

Oh FFS!

It's beyond infuriating!
