I’d like to know what was going on that no staff member had already raised things. The School website is currently down, but according to NCES they have 64.97 classroom teachers (a student/teacher ratio of 22.21:1 for the 1,443 young people in grades 9-12 [age 14-18] who attend) & they will have a SLT outwith that too (I’m not sure if they have police, but they’ll have a nurse, office staff etc).
Far too many adults will have seen that individual wandering about dressed wholly inappropriately & failed to act to safeguard students.
9% of the student population are American Indian/Alaska Native^ & 6% are Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. Only 3% are Black; 14% are Asian; 9% are Hispanic; 18% are Mixed Race; & the remaining 41% are white. Anchorage itself is less multicultural.
So the dynamics become even more troubling with the potential for targeting very vulnerable demographics - children who know they belong to groups who are still appallingly treated. They knew they had no recourse however uncomfortable they might be; & even adults from those groups will have been hesitant to make a challenge to a powerful & protected white male. The initial response from the school shows they were right to be, too: they were all set to try & pretend there was no problem (other than, presumably, whoever took & shared the footage).
^Those are descriptors used by NCES, I won’t presume to alter them.
(All NCES stats are for school year 2022/23.)
