...on International Womens' Day?
I'm a primary teacher and unashamedly a feminist!

LeoTheLeopard · 27/02/2024 21:08

I’m giving that a YES

NoBinturongsHereMate · 27/02/2024 22:09

That would be an excellent thing to wear.

FrancescaContini · 28/02/2024 08:28

I don’t see why not as long as you know something factual about the names listed and can answer questions when the pupils ask, “Miss, who are these people?”

Are you in the US?

FrancescaContini · 28/02/2024 08:34

Also: just seen that you’re a primary teacher. I don’t know how you explain Linda Lovelace, and Parton is Dolly, I assume, who sang Stand by your Man so I am not sure why she’s on the list but…your choice!

I think that refers to ADA Lovelace. At least, I would hope so

FrancescaContini · 28/02/2024 08:39

Ah! I’ve just learned something new - thank you! I’m embarrassed that I thought of Linda 🤦‍♀️

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/02/2024 08:39

Yes I can't believe that is Linda! Ada Lovelace seems much more likely.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/02/2024 08:40

Dolly Parton is also quite a philanthropist I think, if it is her.

soupmaker · 28/02/2024 08:41

LOL at Linda Lovelace.

Dolly's books for children initiative would we worth talking to the kids about.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/02/2024 08:43

Yes, that was what I was thinking about!

I’m going to have to use a phrase that really gives me the teenage ick: Every day is a school day.

Dolly Parton - the self made millionaire who has founded numerous charities and literacy programs and is consistently supportive of women and girls in the music industry, that Dolly Parton ?

You might not like her songs but expecting all feminist icons to fit your particular mould of how a feminist should act seems pretty reductive, 6th form feminism doesn’t work out in the real world.

FrancescaContini · 28/02/2024 08:49

I stand chastened and humbled. I apologise for not knowing enough about Dolly.

valorie · 28/02/2024 08:49

Stand By Your Man is Tammy Wynette, not Dolly Parton

That is straight where your mind went 😀😀😀

FrancescaContini · 28/02/2024 08:51

I really do need to go back to 6th form, don’t I?

I think they sang it together at some stage - ?

Beat me to it. And no, doesn't seem like Parton ever performed it.

To be fair I was a bit snippy with my last comment - sorry ! It’s just we see purity spirals play out a lot particularly in left leaning circles and it never ends well, its important not to get caught up in ‘my brand of feminism is better than yours’.

theremustbecake · 28/02/2024 09:35

It seems too political to me. Why not just teach them about these women? You don't need to wear anything special for the day, apart from turning up and standing in front of the class.

I am also v feminist but seeing the backlash... it's also too close to waving flags to me.

Dolly Parton sang and wrote the song '9 to 5' and played a role in that same iconic film. The song has the most brilliant opening lines

"Tumble out of bed
And stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition"

You can't be serious?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 28/02/2024 09:49

Too political?

How can feminism not be political?

And a list of names that opens a conversation is nothing like waving a flag.

PoppingTomorrow · 28/02/2024 09:50

Which Johnson do you think it is? Amy?
