Dear Administrators,

We can save you the enormous report that you’ll have to write on why The Body Shop is where it is:

  • The products are a poor imitation of what they were;
  • The prices are too high;
  • You alienated your core customers (women) over our rights, identity etc.

Yours, with kind regards and hope of Fuzzy Peach coming back,
Mumsnet

Quality has declined

ClematisRock · 09/02/2024 20:17

Yep.
Very poor quality.
Very annoying sales assistants who follow you round the shop despite your appeals to be left alone.
Far too many chemicals. Yes you're not testing on animals but your list of ingredients is worrying.
Prices are too high.
You don't appeal to any demographic let alone the holy grail of 18-35.

Luddite26 · 09/02/2024 20:20

Haven't stepped in The Body Shop never mind purchased since Anita Roddick sold out to L'OrƩal. How is it even still going it will not be missed by me. That was one of the biggest betrayals ever.
Yes I know another company owns it now. I know AR is long dead but that was that for me. All it's principles went. Good riddance.

WomenShouldStillWinWomensSports · 11/02/2024 21:14

Aww I'm playing the tiniest violin for them.

We had such an extensive thread with a really good breakdown of exactly where they went wrong and clearly they never learned what we all saw a mile off.

The BBC article also suggests they had hidden the fact they didn't have any working capital. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-68261784

Can a business really be bought/sold without any comeback on the sellers if they've lied about the financial position? I really hope the sellers get sued over this. Serves them right for being twats. I bet they'll just feign ignorance though, that seems to get you out of everything if you're white collar.

The Body Shop

The Body Shop set to appoint administrators in UK

The retailer is expected to undergo a major restructure, leading to shop closures and job losses.

It's fraud, if they really hid the company’s true state. The purchaser would almost certainly have carried out due diligence, so presumably the seller would have to have put some real, deliberate effort into covering up.

SidewaysOtter · 11/02/2024 21:55

The picture in the BBC article of Anita in the shops as they were makes me very sad. I miss The Body Shop when it was like that. The soaps! The bottles lined up in order of height! It was like a sweet shop, and all gone in a wave of mediocrity, blandness and profit margins.

Much as Lush is another company which has let its customers down (I was a BIG Lush fan but I could not agree with many of their campaigns, including the hunt sab support and anti-police stuff) he was absolutely right with this: ā€œYou can't cheapen everything, remove the values and take more profit without the customers noticing and going elsewhere."

There was an article about it in the Times this morning. Those points came up repeatedly in the comments.

Isn't this the company who wrote that awful tweet to the utter legend that is JK Rowling?

OceanicBoundlessness · 11/02/2024 22:04

I posted back my loyalty card and stopped shopping there as part of the nestle boycott when it was sold to L'OrƩal.
When it changed hands again and I went back I didn't recognise any of the products or the prices.

Agree though re your last point, Lush seem to be doing pretty well (sadly).

I loved the grapefruit shampoo. Even now, the smell of grapefruit takes me back to spending my Christmas money in The Body Shop with my grandmother in 1990.

There is SO much goodwill and nostalgia for this shop, but the private equity wankers have just spaffed it all.

ArchetypalBusyMum · 11/02/2024 23:17

I really miss the green tomato body wash that transported my senses to heaven.
Agree with @SidewaysOtter all that goodwill, all they had to do was keep what was good.

Thank you, I'd missed this at the time. The Tw talking about his "periods" is very gross indeed.

I'd like to think that, although this is only 3y ago, no man would get away with talking about his periods now. Ever since that male period ambassador thing happened in 2022.

Every time I feel hopeless about things, it's good to read old twitter threads and the comments under old news articles and see how far the consensus has slowly shifted back towards common sense
