JK Rowling pays more tax this year

The Times published its list of the UK's top 100 taxpayers today.

These are all people who are fabulously wealthy, naturally. But most of them paid less tax this year than they did last year - because their income dropped.

Among the exceptions was JK Rowling, who, at number 31 in the list, paid £40m in tax, which was "significantly more" than she paid last year.

As the Times says: "Another Fantastic Beasts film, a computer game and more adventures for her detective Cormoran Strike have boosted the Harry Potter writer’s earnings."

It seems the more the anti-JKR zealots spout lies about her, make death threats against her, burn her books and demand boycotts, the more everyone else loves her. No wonder they appear to be engaged in one long toddler temper tantrum.

This can't be true. Joshua Kaplan (Playwright) said she's 'blown it all to hell'.

How can she have made more money than ever? 🤔

Hoardasurass · 26/01/2024 20:33

I love it when these twats spend their own money on her books to burn them. It's a bit daft really

Cosmosforbreakfast · 26/01/2024 20:34

Delighted she's doing so well!

PronounssheRa · 26/01/2024 21:19

She is just so awful isn't she, paying all that tax, on top of all her charity support etc 🙄

Anyway if this is what 'blown it all to hell' looks like, I'm in!

Hibernatalie · 26/01/2024 21:28

Love her - she deserves every success

MorrisZapp · 26/01/2024 21:32

Yes she really has 'thrown away all the goodwill' hasn't she 😂😂😂👌

Tallisker · 26/01/2024 21:37

If she's paying £40m in tax, what on earth is her income likely to be? She deserves every penny and she's welcome to the £25 I shelled out for the latest Strike.

pronounsbundlebundle · 26/01/2024 21:50

I love her so much. Unlike most of the rest of the 1% she never evades taxes, uses her money for so much good and is just an all round wonderful person.

I actually find spending money on anything which will enrich her a joyful experience, unlike most things these days. I don't really think the government is using my taxes very wisely, nor most companies the profits they make, but I think jkr uses a very significant amount of her profits to help those most in need.

Thankfully both my children adore the Harry Potter world she created so birthdays are easy, I love strike (ok and HP too) and DH likes the game. Win win all round.

Recently went to wb studios and I almost had a little cry when there was a video of her at the start. Had to pull myself together before I embarrassed the kids! I am so thankful to this wise, wonderful and extremely brave woman.

MorrisZapp · 26/01/2024 21:52

Bravo!

Pudmyboy · 27/01/2024 01:38

Wonderful woman, and has said she pays as she was grateful for the support she got when she needed it most, she has repaid that by a million by now yet still happy to contribute

TheSandgroper · 27/01/2024 03:22

All those people getting their treatments from Gids etc, where do they think the money for that comes from? ‘Cos if it’s on the NHS, it’s free, innit?

Fair play to JKR. But she must despair, sometimes.

yesmen · 27/01/2024 03:51

I am so grateful to that woman.

I got great ideas about being a parent from Dumbeldore.

My children had YEARS of fun and inspiration with her books and films.

She is saving my dds future.

I wish I could thank her!

WomanXXWorldsOriginsofMothersofAllNations · 27/01/2024 04:23

I hate her so much I’ve just downloaded Hogwarts Legacy so she’ll have to pay even more tax ha! <evil cackle>

Now if I wanted to burn it cos that’ll learn her, does that mean I’ve got to set fire to my PS5?! 🤪

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/01/2024 04:27

Atta girl Joanne!

Boiledbeetle · 27/01/2024 16:46

Ideally wonders if 40 million is the tax bill how much do you reckon she earns per second of the day?

timetofetgit · 27/01/2024 16:52

She's so utterly awesome. She opened up reading to my dyslexic children because HP is so visual and exciting. She's fabulously intelligent and comes across as an all round good egg.

About £3 per second, every second of the year.

Bobbotgegrinch · 27/01/2024 17:07

I saw this on the UK sub Reddit yesterday, and was very surprised to see all the most upvoted comments on the post were in support of her, talking about her charity work etc. It made a nice change to see the majority in support of her, especially on Reddit of all places. Opinions are definitely shifting.

The replies to these comments were the usual binfire of course, so now the whole thread looks like the mods have taken a machete to it.

Bloody hell!

Tallisker · 27/01/2024 19:25

I can't do the maths, the numbers are too big for my pea brain Grin

I put a supportive comment on a FB post that was being negative about her and expected a pile on from the blue hair brigade but got one negative comment and about 20 pro-JK responses. I was pleasantly surprised. Might the tide be turning?
