Came across this article on comparing what Kathleen Stock terms the 'immersive fiction' of AGP with the public personas of WWE wrestling and it makes some interesting points.

I’d never heard of the term 'kayfabe' before and I never watched WWE so this was an informative read.

I think he pretty much nails it, right down to the comparison to wrestling. Because no one, except a child, could seriously believe the wrestling matches were for real. Equally, I can't understand why apparent intelligent adults fall for the public face of the trans madness, at least on the male side. I don't think the same thing is going on with the girls drawn into this, and the youngest boys.

Even as a child, I couldn’t understand why people believed wrestling was real and not scripted 🤷‍♀️ Fake behaviour activates my wince response; I don’t feel comfortable around deception.

I don't know much about WWE but British wrestling takes me right back to watching telly at my Nana's when there was fuck all on. Grandad asleep in his chair and Mick McMaaahhhhnussss!!! on the box.

I agree about the fake behaviour, perhaps to be a politician you have to be comfortable with insincerity. PM's questions is very reminiscent of the smack talk before wrestling and boxing matches.

WWE is pure theatre. My brother was a fan in the glory days of Hulk Hogan etc, when it was WWF. He went to see them on a family holiday to Florida.

Another well put, succinct one to archive. We're getting knee deep in them, and they're getting plainer and plainer. Isn't this a far cry from the days when just ONE escaping out into the media was so rare?

You’re so right - 2023-24 has brought more plain speaking, more useful speaking in general on this issue, actually, which is great. Now if we could only stop newspapers using female pronouns for men in their reporting, that would make a huge difference. It’s been so refreshing to see some women (and a few men) on YouTube shows, podcasts and discussion shows refusing to indulge in fakery with pronouns. It makes discussing the issues so much easier and clearer.
