Interesting link on the sidebar of that Void piece about this comparison with left-handedness (!), which I hadn't heard of before. More shoddy logic from people who should know better.

What we see is a gradual suppression of left-handedness over the course of two-and-a half centuries spanning the industrial revolution, where machinery was inevitably designed to be used by the majority (ie right-handers). While one factor certainly is that during the rise of universal schooling religious views about left-handedness being “sinister” resulted in schoolchildren facing regular beatings for writing with the “wrong” hand, this was far from the only cause.

For the analogy to work; surely it entails medicalising the left hand in some way. Removal, swapping or medication.

Which is basically what happened.

Note they don't use the whole graph on the John Oliver show and so the data was misrepresented.

Really interesting, thanks OP. Also, I hadn’t come across the acronym SOGI (Sexual Orientation Gender Identity) as an alternative to LGBT++ before so I learnt something new there. Presumably an attempt to give equal weight to any orientation you care to think up.
