Women's rights general conversations - Thread 7

Continuation of Thread 6.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

For Transgender Awareness Week (next week, for those who may have forgotten to add it to their diaries) my company is hosting an event where we can listen to 3 Americans reflect on the current state of trans rights.

We are not in the US, nor are we US owned. I'm not aware of us having any American staff. (And, needless to say, we have never had an event on the current state of women's rights.)

Every month seems to have something. Trans day of remembrance, pronouns day, trans awareness week, genderfluid day, trans day of visibility, trans parent day, pride is now an entire month and a lot of places have pride parades weeks later...

And then they got the audacity on mothers day or international womans day to also make it about themselves.

This is very perceptive, I hadn't thought of it in this way before.

“The reason a lot of young progressives are so mad at JK Rowling is that they read the books as kids, and they thought they were Harry or Hermione. But they grew up into people like Percy or Dolores Umbridge or Cornelius Fudge or Rita Skeeter,” Friedman began, naming characters who either actively denied reality or dutifully tattled on friends, neighbors, and even family members who refused to do the same. “And they know it. And on some level, they’re ashamed.”

I think the people who instigate that know exactly what they are doing, and it's deeply cynical. The disingenuousness!

We mumsnetters have the No 1 and the No 4 spot in political and protest poetry!

That's all I'm just here to boast on behalf of all the poem writers!

As you were.

(Accidentally drops link to volume two as I leave! Such a litterbug)

This is going well and i'm only a few posts in:

"You’re wrong. It’s absolutely wonderful to encourage tolerance and inclusivity from a young age.

What is unacceptable is homophobia and transphobia. The issues with gender recognition and erosion of women’s rights are not an excuse to spread intolerance and hatred of anyone"

right back to reading the rest of the posts!

It's incredible to me that so many people get on their high horses about how kind they are but can't extend that to women.

Isn't it! I'm now transphobic according to one poster because my definition of transwoman is 'man'

I was only able to read a little bit of that thread. I'm trying very hard to maintain my sanity these days and not make my poor brain boil. The thing about it is, that I'm fine if you're all gender woke - which is a lie but whatever, I accept that those are your views even though I would not die to give you the right to speak pure shite - but who on earth thinks that it's okay to put political images on children's stickers?! Children deserve to live in a world that's not full of political grandstanding, they deserve stickers that say nothing about political ideology and have nothing to say but look at the pretty cat or something like that. It's just wrong.

I love the Daily Wire article. I've not read any of the Potter books so the bad guys sort of go over my head - like most of us who've been alive during the Potter times a lot of the main character names are familiar to me - but I reckon there's a lot of truth in his theory and I like it!

I've never been sure what people with he/them them/he pronouns expect. We now have a blog at work explaining - he [beardy man with a man's name, now a full time they/them] expected both to be used in any given conversation. And now as a themby gets upset by being himmed because it means he's been misgendered and has to work out what to do about it.

The utter self absorption is astounding.
