Women's rights general conversations - Thread 7

Continuation of Thread 6.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

I'm not sure that I like KJK but I admire her greatly. I certainly don't dislike her but feel we'd disagree on too much for me to like her. She's bloody great though.

'Admire' is the word I should have used, I think. I admire her brassiness and that she's willing to speak out in the way she does.

Clabony · 19/11/2023 14:10

Admire is a good word. I wouldn't play monopoly with her however, because she Always Wins!😄

This could be interesting

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/11/19/unbeaten-ramsbottom-womens-cricket-team-joining-mens-league/

Although, looking at the team picture. I don't recognise the green logo but part of it is giving me gender neutral toilet vibes.

Interesting? The men will wipe the floor with them. It's going to be a sad spectacle.

IcakethereforeIam · 20/11/2023 10:30

@OneMorePlant I think you're correct. It'll be another data point regarding men in women's sports, or vice versa in this case. Perhaps they could beat a really mediocre men's side, but at a similar level or even just a side that's an 'also ran'? Like I said, interesting.

IcakethereforeIam · 21/11/2023 13:47

Came across this in the New Zealand Herald.

All the identities are suppressed. Though the complainant is gagging to get the names out there. The way accusations of transphobia are thrown around, it's entirely possible none of the participants are trans and the dispute started over parking or taking the last rolo.

The judge said the email the student alleged was defamatory “does not, on its face, engage in any LGBTQIA+, specifically transgender, issues”. Photo / File

Academic refutes claims they defamed student suspended after 'aggressive' exchange.

It's further complicated by the student's claim that the academic is “prejudiced towards transgender women”, rather than against them. Perhaps the problem lies in having an essay marked down for incompetent use of prepositions?

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 21/11/2023 15:04

Interesting that the judge is able to be publicly so clear about the relative merits of the evidence on each side, before the case has concluded. I can't see that being allowed in the UK.

And good news about cricket. Shame it's only elite level, but it's a start.

duc748 · 21/11/2023 15:28

Seems to me it's important that the 'big' sports (football, cricket, both rugby codes, etc) get it right, then it's a pointer for all the other sports too.

SqueakyDinosaur · 21/11/2023 15:41

I'm very much looking forward to the full reporting on that NZ case in due course. Perhaps the student will try to sue the judge for also being a transphobic bigot?

SqueakyDinosaur · 22/11/2023 00:17

There may be a difference in that RRS was a postgraduate student IIRC. This poor lass was a 2nd year undergraduate.

Gonners · 22/11/2023 09:16

I see that North Hertfordshire Museum has trans-ed Elagabalus, though it doesn't seem to involve a great deal more than changing the pronouns on the label for a single coin. I'm sure he'd be delighted though.

Makes a change from Hatshepsut, Joan of Arc and James Barry.

Oh Kuc, so sorry I didn't know you were going. Unfortunately my train was late so we only got there for a few speeches and the social after. I'm an ex JTTer as well.

I wonder how many JTTers/MNers were there! (Curious who you were on JTT now...)

We may need a spreadsheet. And please come and join us in the Talk Lair.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 22/11/2023 11:16

Over in the other feminism board, someone has just asked the 'what is going on?' question.

Interestingly, it's the same university - Bristol. They appear to have a shockingly poor record in looking after their students.

Woman2023 · 22/11/2023 15:55

I would dm you but I don't seem to be able to do it on the app!

duc748 · 22/11/2023 16:13

Intrigued now, @Woman2023 ! 😃

SinnerBoy · 22/11/2023 16:58

Likewise!

I think it's pretty obvious who I was on there....

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 22/11/2023 17:09

I don't think the app does DMs (or very much else).
