Continuation of Thread 6.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Leather thorn resistant gardening gloves are a problem also. I'm a size 7 glove too.
I'll just have to leave the vacuuming to the men here at Clabony mansions.
Fat arse though. Good for sitting on and watching.

Clabony · 17/11/2023 10:17

Thanks so much Vegemite! I've got lots of roses but always get scratched when pruning. The smallest gloves I could get keep coming off as they are too big. These look promising!

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 17/11/2023 10:32

They're very good for rose pruning, Clabony. I spend much of the winter pruning roses and find these gloves have the best protection of any glove I've used previously. That they're also warm and waterproof is an added bonus.

Clabony · 17/11/2023 12:12

I've ordered them, thanks so much, a bonus that they are waterproof. A little treat for myself. Lovely to meet another rose fan! Always room to squeeze another rose in!😀

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 17/11/2023 12:40

You can never have too many roses! Do you have a favourite?

IcakethereforeIam · 17/11/2023 12:48

Jic you haven't noticed David Austin have 15% off bare root roses until 22nd November, code GREEN23.

I'm going to get a Margaret Merrill and either a Ferdinand Pichard or Rosa Mundi. Just waiting for bloke to make up his mind.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 17/11/2023 13:09

Ooh, that 'Margaret Merril' is gorgeous and its scented too. Very tempting.

I'm currently extremely pleased with climbing 'New Dawn' which I planted against the walls of a Cotswold garden in 2016, after seeing the same at Asthall Manor. There are fierce winter winds in that spot, but the roses are thriving.

The picture was taken at Asthall Manor and is how I hope the ones I put in will eventually look.

Vegemite I've a Desdemona that seems to do so well, I'm very fond of her. I've inherited a Rambling Rector that has taken over a couple of trees and an old brick outhouse, the couple of weeks it's in flower it's tremendous.

But I've just seen Deep Secret that you've posted! Beautiful!

Cake I like Margaret. That's so pretty. I'll need a new rose or two ,or three, to go with my gloves. Thanks for the heads up on the discount. Who could resist?😍

IcakethereforeIam · 17/11/2023 13:22

I spoke to one of the gardeners at Fryer's roses, who was really knowledgeable. He was telling us all about old Mags. She married a very wealthy man, a Carnegie?, who had the rose bred for her. Then had a perfume developed for her that matched the scent of the rose.

I love that deep red, velvety textured-type rose, of course it has to be scented....perhaps I could stretch to three?

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 17/11/2023 13:31

Go for it, cake. If Deep Secret is well fed it'll flower continuously. I gave my neighbour a stem in a bud vase and she said it scented a whole room.

Clabony · 17/11/2023 13:32

A couple of years ago I bought three new roses from Harkness called John Ystumllyn. I'd been doing some family history which is what prompted me.

First time I'd bought from them. Sad to say, they haven't done too well, despite much coddling. The blooms droop as soon as out of bud. I'm hoping they pick up next year. I prefer to buy from David Austen in hindsight.

The John Ystumllyn Rose

The John Ystumllyn Rose is the first ever rose to be launched that is named after an ethnic minority Briton.

I'm tempted by a rose that I've only seen in photos though, Hommage à Barbara, bit soppy but that was my mum's name (not the 'Hommage à' bit). It's sold by Peter Beale's and looks truly beautiful. Deep, deep red with crinkly edges. Like my mumGrin

MmePoppySeedDefage · 17/11/2023 13:41

I have a lovely David Austin rose, Teasing Georgia, a warm yellow climber that repeats and is healthy. Princess Alexandra of Kent is a beautiful colour and shape, too.

But Susan Williams Ellis was awful - not early as promised and dull, and eventually turned up its toes.

William Shakespeare suffers badly from black spot - a known problem but DA still sells it.

My favourite rose in our garden isn't that well known - Fire Dance - it's a crimson climber, little scent but the flowers each last a month plus it has loads in clusters, it repeats a bit and the hips are lovely

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 17/11/2023 13:47

Had some lovely roses from David Austin here too. Also Ashridge Trees. I had 'Winchester Cathedral' and 'Gertrude Jekyll' from them and they've been excellent. 'Champagne Moment' is another lovely rose which starts early and finishes late. I ordered that one partly for the name, which is a bit daft, but have been very pleased with it.

I have about a dozen DA roses. I generally select those with a strong fragrance, partly because I lost some of my sense of smell after covid. Gertrude Jekyll is outstanding for old rose fragrance, sompletely fills the garden at times (it's a tiny, tiny garden, though).

I have a Gabriel Oak in a big pot by th kitchen door which is gorgeous, but the finest fragrance for me is from Crown Princess Margarita, a climber specimen. It's not as strong as GD but delicate and somehow more floral. It still has a few blooms even now, on raggedy stems that will meet the pruning knife if the blasted weather lets me in.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 18/11/2023 13:19

Thanks veg.

Clabony · 18/11/2023 14:53

Heading over, thanks so much.

Kucinghitam · 18/11/2023 17:08

I went to LWS today, my first time at one of these events! All 4 of us walked there together, but teen DDs quickly got restless and uneasy when they saw the Stripey Flags of Righteousness on the other side of the square and realised that we were standing with the Wrong Side of History (they're very much captured by BeKind because Reasons). So DH whisked them away to the library.

Anyway, it was an interesting experience, listening to so many women expressing themselves freely. I was pleasantly surprised to see many younger women there. Also, KJK has a real (not sure how to describe it) charisma or stage presence or maybe just sheer balls.

I met up with a MNer/ex-JTTer who shall be free to name herself if she wishes Wink It was lovely to hang out with you, mystery person Grin

That sounds good, Kuc. I like KJK and would love to go to a LWS event one day.

MouseMinge · 18/11/2023 20:17

I'm not sure that I like KJK but I admire her greatly. I certainly don't dislike her but feel we'd disagree on too much for me to like her. She's bloody great though.

StephanieSuperpowers · 18/11/2023 21:26

I don't know whether I agree with KJK on anything other than the substantive issue, but I think she's marvellous. I do think that the plurality of voices and opinion on the GC side us representative of the facrthat it's very broad based, an opinion that most people from all walks of life and beliefs share.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 18/11/2023 21:58

Well done Kuc. It sounds like a good meeting and very well-organised. Like others, I admire KJK tremendously although don't agree with her on everything.

I used to work in Park Square, in the building in front of which the RSOH was peaking the world.
