A new body has been set up to ‘tackle the culture of fear and intimidation’ in creative industries
Artists who have found themselves and their work cancelled over their personal beliefs will be supported by a new organisation which describes itself as “an emergency project to tackle the culture of fear and intimidation” in the creative industries.
Freedom in the Arts has been founded by Rosie Kay, a dancer and choreographer who was forced to resign from her company in 2021 after being accused of making transphobic comments, and Denise Fahmy, a former senior officer at Arts Council England who said she felt forced to resign after harassment over her gender-critical beliefs.
It will offer support to artists who find their work has been cancelled, and “champion artistic freedom”, as well as holding arts institutions to account to ensure they “welcome a diversity of thought and belief”.
