Anyone here going to the Brighton conference in February 2024?

Or who's been to one before and can give me some idea what to expect?

Thanks, I've read the official stuff. I meant more what it's like on the ground.

It's very similar to Unison's other conferences but there tends to be less actual debate and more consensus.

Expect several men who identify as women to be on stage, getting as much sympathy as they can. Also expect the LGBT+ group to submit motions promoting "sex work".

Other than that there's generally some interesting discussion and often a high up shadow cabinet minister speaking at some point.

That would be very helpful if I'd been to any Unison conferences. Or ones for another union. I'm a complete newbie! I know nothing. And our branch isn't very active about going to things, so not much advice available from other officers. I only signed up because they've never had a Women's Officer and that annoyed me.

Should have put in the OP: 'please explain to an absolute beginner'.

Had a feeling it would be v TWAW, but good to have a heads up about 'sex work is work' motions.

Am I representive or a delegate - do I vote for the branch or according to conscience? Do I vote at all? Are there any small-group discussions or just motions with a whole-hall vote?

Nominally you're a delegate but your branch may not have met to decide how you should vote as it isn't national conference.

As well as the debates in the main hall there will be lots of small fringe meetings on a variety of topics relevant to women. There's also stalls- some selling stuff, others from groups- eg Nordic Model Now used to always be there when I went.

@TinselAngel this exactly OP!

Thanks. Quite likely that we won't. I don't remember any previous branch meetings to discuss conference motions - national conference or otherwise.
