'Absolutely discriminatory to allow it'
'Where there is doubt over the competitor’s sex, participants’ birth certificates will be required [Eh? These are meaningless, surely?] for registration in competitions where a “higher physical strength can help”.
The championship events where the ban will be effective are: the long casting of sea weights, shore angling, carp fishing and fly fishing.
The decision was made at the federation’s Praesidium [executive] meeting in Rome.
Last week, the six-strong England squad opted against competing in Italy at the Shore Angling World Championships during November, following a decision to include Becky Lee Birtwhistle Hodges.'
'Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne told the Telegraph: “These are courageous women and their Italian president agreed.
“I’ve asked for a sea angling trip with them.”
Wendy Metcalfe, a member of the England women’s shore angling team, thanked the 81-year-old peer for her support.
In a post shared by Baroness Nicholson to Twitter, Ms Metcalfe wrote: “It means so much to me that you took this on for us, when so many were not interested.
“I cannot stop smiling and I really cannot thank you enough.”
Baroness Nicholson replied: “You are a wonderful team of England’s leading ladies in all that you do, and I’m honoured and very, very happy to know you all.”
Fiona McAnena, director of Fair Play For Women, a campaign group which champions women and girls sex-based rights, told the Telegraph they had worked with the England team.'
