Gender-neutral toilets stink in more ways than one

Shared loos have been imposed on the rest of us in the cause of making a tiny minority feel comfortable – and they’re awful

The gender-neutral toilet is a Trojan Horse. It’s designed to shore up the pretence that men and women are interchangeable by people who don’t agree there are only two sexes in the first place. However, there is no mistaking the fact that the Ladies and the Gents are very different. One stinks, and it isn’t ours, is it, girls?

Can’t read the article, but they do stink, and there’s wee on the seat and floor 🤢

biedrona · 29/09/2023 21:27

One time I walked in on a man who failed to close the door behind him. I guess why would you if you are just there to piss, right? fucking akward

GrumpyPanda · 29/09/2023 21:28

I've been saying for ages the only way these types of setup should be permitted is with a compulsory sitting-down rule and splashback paint to enforce it. Some smart-ass in the comments comes up with the same old, same old airplane example again. Eeww honey, you ever been on an intercontinental flight in your life, and if so, how long did it take you to un-stick your shoesoles from the gooey mess that passes for the floor in those facilities?

And to think that just a few years ago we were still arguing about the best way to implement potty parity legislation.... 2:1 or better 3 or even 4:1 provision in favour of women? How far we've slipped backwards in such a short space of time.

Just stop the page from loading when it's about 80 percent done.

Yeah that's happened to me before too 😕. It's enough to put me off unisex toilets completely.

Yes shared stinks.
I've found I have to flush before using at work lately. We used to be female heavy workplace, but have more men joining us recently and the staff loos are single room, lockable with a sink and bin. I really want to stick a notice on the wall behind the loo that says flush after use. So I don't have to. And something about peeing on the seat.

PatatiPatatras · 30/09/2023 05:34

People are always arguing on reddit that women's toilets can get nasty too, supposed cleaners purporting that the female facilities are usually worse than the men's. Hmm but there's nothing like a train ride to remind you to do your shoe laces before going into the loos. I never have to remember that pretty much anywhere else. So I don't believe the arm chair cleaners.

Tlolljs · 30/09/2023 05:39

Went to the cinema last night. Lovely new complex, toilets stunk.

Going to send a complaint in later.

Stopsnowing · 30/09/2023 06:44

better to call them mixed sex toilets

bringonyourwreckingball · 30/09/2023 07:28

My kids school just built a new block with gender neutral toilets. They’re already disgusting, the girls won’t use them. And no sanitary bins so actually not gender neutral at all.

FarEast · 30/09/2023 08:49

If you like this article and agree with it, please complete the public consultation in new regulations for toilet provision in public spaces. On my phone so can’t link, but I started a thread in here with the Sex Matters advice. I’ll bump that.

JaninaDuszejko · 30/09/2023 08:55

We've got unisex toilets at work. New building, completely enclosed toilets. They are fine but crucially we have cleaners who clean them 2 or 3 times a day (haven't worked out the exact schedule) so they are always spotless.

It seems a frequent male thing. There's mixed sex facilities I have to use regularly, all fully separate enclosed rooms with basins/hand drying etc so fine - except that many men leave the door wide when peeing.

I'm sure it's a lovely cock mate, but I'm not scoring it out of ten, and I'm not going to clap for you. Close the bloody door and show some consideration.

The lack of sanitary bins in a public toilet is illegal. You should challenge the school over this.

I used to clean office blocks, the male toilets were usually a lot more disgusting than the female ones.

I went to an event at a university last week, the toilets were categorised as 'urinals' and 'stalls', basically the men had the whole of the 'urinals' one to themselves, and went to do their shits in the only one females had access to - long smelly shits while watching porn on their phones probably 🙄

Justme56 · 30/09/2023 09:25

My DH went to the Grand National this year and commented on how disgusting the men’s loos were - swimming in urine. I do wonder if some men prefer unisex as women end up having to make some attempt to clean them before they are usable! Plane and train loos - yuk and the thought of walking into a block of loos and being the only woman in a room full of men (which could be the case) is awful.

Jk987 · 30/09/2023 09:25

It's not just the cubicles, it's the hand washing area that I hate sharing with men. I don't want male colleagues around while I'm checking my appearance and putting on my lippy. I don't want them in the cubicle next door when I'm ripping open a new sanitary pad. It's a total invasion of privacy.

Yes, I also used to clean offices and schools. No matter how grim the female toilets were (occasionally bad in some schools), the male toilets were always measurably worse. It was actually quantifiable - for same size facilities it would take twice as long to get the male toilets back to a decent state.

BabyStopCryin · 30/09/2023 09:42

In truth - they are just men’s loos that women have to use. Let one man in and they become men’s loos.

One (of many) things I hate about mixed sex loos is that men usually don’t put the seat back down after they’ve had a wee. I don’t want to have to touch the loo seat in a public toilet. So so gross 😷

Startingagainandagain · 30/09/2023 10:05

This is one of the main reasons I hate our office space.

We have one floor in a crumbling community centre in London as a work space.

There is only one loo on that floor and no other facilities in that building are unsafe to use (as the centre supports men with serious problems with drugs and alcohol and clients use the other facility)

It makes me feel vulnerable every time I go into that toilet.

Not very clean either.

There should be a legal requirement for office spaces to have at least two spaces, one for men and one for women.

BabyStopCryin · 30/09/2023 10:28

I’m in central London. Plenty of 5* hotels and fancy stores to use if absolutely necessary.
