Is anyone watching this?

I loved the first season of this so was thrilled to see season 2 was out.

I'm halfway through he first episode and it's got x2 separate transgender story lines. Annoyingly didactic and overly sympathetic to the trans plight. Older generation are portrayed as being out of date and bigoted. Mother of youth trans already referred to as a TERF and characterised as a ranting over the top feminist going on about the patriarchy at the dinner table making her look like an unhinged nut job.

I'm wondering if the whole season will be as annoying as the first half of episode one or if I should give up watching now.

I thought I would love the first season of this - brilliant writer, was absolutel blown away by Trainspotting and all his books, I loved reading them out loud so I could work out the dialogue! Also thought the cast of this looked brilliant.

But I just could not get on board with it at all. I don't know what it was but something was missing for me big time, sadly.

I’ve just finished the book, but haven’t seen the series. I thought the book showed quite well how overbearing some transwomen /TRAs can be and how they can change group dynamics and campus culture.

I didn’t care much for how the mother was portrayed though.

Sorry to bring back up, watching now and it's painful, 15 mins into ep1....
"All men have a woman inside them and all women have a man inside them.."
Said with a straight face and very very serious.

MyGooseisTotallyLoose · 21/01/2024 20:03

God its fucking dire... the ramming down your throat of gender politics and clear delineation of goodies/baddies is awful.
Seriously it's like it was written as a shitey school project.
Even the acting is appalling!

Yes you have to wonder if anyone enjoys being lectured to like this.

Just thought I would add this here:

Welsh said he wanted to be “sensitive” to gender identity issues in the show, which engaged a trans advisor during filming.

He argued that the end of capitalism has sparked an identity crisis for many, including “rich, privileged, white, heterosexual” men.

So men aren't responsible for their behaviour. Its just the end of capitalism means they no longer have an "identity". So they just thought lets colonise women's?

lcakethereforeIam · 08/08/2024 22:22

When did capitalism end? Nobody tells me anything.

That's odd - Welsh has always been pretty GC on social media.

I'm no expert as I am totally uninterested in him, but it seems he has spoken out against the treatment of JKR and said something about women's rights shouldn't be ignored.

But judging by his writing, books and tv, he seems obsessed by trans people who seem to feature in every plot.

I just posted the comment about the end of capitalism as it is so bonkers that even if he has defened JKR it isn't on the basis of women's sex based rights.

He's still a sort of anti-establishment punk lad, so his understanding of events, situations comes from that focus.

TheMarzipanDildo · 09/08/2024 05:06

I suspect that what has happened is that his views have developed on this since he wrote the book.

It's happening all around you, the transfer of wealth and asssets to the ultra-rich is causing the collapse of society we are increasingly seeing around us.

You mean he needed the money so decided to go down the "bee kinnnd" route as the easiest route to a pay check.
As someone said above he still identifies as an anti establishment punk, I think shitting on women's rights is the best rebellion he's got left to him these days. Give it a few years and he'll be writing about wheelchair bound old gits sexually abusing their nurses.
And people will still say "but trainspotting was good"

Which makes it all the more strange he should support something that is being pushed by every government in the west plus by big pharma and capitalists the world over.

So they just thought let’s colonise women's?

All other groups/cultures/countries had been colonised, so naturally with that male colonising impulse to boldly stick their penises go where no man except the people that live there has gone before they settled on colonising women and our spaces. Some macho ones would rather colonise outer space or the deep sea… when or if they move on to colonise someone/where else and forget about women is anyone’s guess.

Call me stupid, but I'd never thought of it like that. Obviously,I'd thought of the breaking taboos, showing they could, reasons, but colonial subjection is an interesting comparison. Something to think about, thank you👍

I do think that people can changes their minds and it’s not always a cynical thing though.

I’m pretty sure he’s been more vocally GC ish since writing the book.
