5 Israelis arrested on suspicion of gang-raping British woman in Cyprus - 4 years after similar case

Not forgetting that 4 years ago the men flew back to Israel and were greeted like heros.

And guess what? Nir Yaslovitz, the defense attorney in an apparently similar case in 2019 will represent them

Needless to say it isn't just Israeli men in Cyprus. It seems to be part of a male tourist to do list.

Did anyone read about the woman who was raped on a beach and the rapist then encourage other men who didn't know each other to also rape her.

Its like incel culture combined with MRAs in some loathsome public assertion of men's rights over wome

I think there is a particular problem with young Israeli men in Cyprus just due to the proximity - they head over there to let off steam after military service. And the military is not known for stamping out misogyny in its new recruits. So you have these groups of young men, cooped up on an army base for months, then set free with their mates egging them on, somewhere far enough from home that what goes on tour stays on tour.

I’d be worried about safety anywhere that has an annual influx of drunken squaddies on leave, regardless of nationality. Almost guaranteed to have rapes and other violence.

Yes these random men ganging up to rape is becoming a familiar story. Men are attacking women on demos objecting to misogynist behaviour. There really is a war going on.

And Mallorca. In the news recently, five French men and one Swiss man gang-raped a British eighteen year old girl. Six German men gang-raped a German eighteen year old girl. Three British men gang-raped a British eighteen year old girl. A British man was arrested trying to flee the country after raping his son's female friend...

Horrendous, and underlines the fact that in cases of multiple-perpetrator rape there is no requirement for the attackers to have been in a 'gang' before the assault.

roses2 · 05/09/2023 15:57

This isn't even in the Cyprus news. I hope this doesn't go the same was as the last case :(

IwantToRetire · 05/09/2023 17:08

Yes all these stories listed above are what I was trying to say.

We know that women have always been victims of male violence, but this recent news of it happening so frequently in public is really disturbing. Dont other people on the beach notice?

I think the link to men who have been cooped up with other men, whether military service, or foreigners bought in to work on construction or whatever in other countries, is part of the problem

And when you compare the headlines in the media given to incidents of rape in public in India, with lots of hand wringing about how awful, but then when some young western woman who have saved up for her summer holidays is gang raped on a beach or in a hotel room, no such headlines.

For me it is part of what seems to be an increasing acceptance of being angry, dismissive and violent towards women with elements of MRAs, TRAs and Incels.

Not forgetting "influencers" like Tate.

Do families know that this is what their son / brother is like?

Probably not. I fear that the word 'gang' is part of the problem - people think 'oh, he isn't in a gang, that's okay'. Multiple-perpetrator rape makes it much clearer.

I only came across the distinction last week on a podcast (link below, it's a hard listen as you can imagine) about a horrible assault a century ago, but could see why it's a useful re-wording.

Agreed
Then in this country we get hand wringing that we are importing misogynistic attitudes with immigration, conveniently overlooking that Western men are equally as capable of this kind of behaviour

Of course it will. All it will take is a call from the Israeli defence minister threatening “unfortunate consequences” and they’ll be on the next plane to Tel Aviv.

Abhannmor · 05/09/2023 19:08

Is there still a British sovereign base in Cyprus? A few years ago a Danish girl was sexually assaulted and murdered by British soldiers there.

Then there are rapes by United States servicemen in Okinawa. Usually swept under the carpet...

PinguMugshot · 06/09/2023 09:39

Is "othering" part of the problem with these cases? Women often seen as less than human anyway, and then when there are additional ethnic/cultural differences between perpetrators and victims, this makes it even worse? With the specific cultural/ethnic backgrounds of perpetrators and victims also being relevant (e.g., possibly perceptions of British girls being "easy" sexual targets, or not worth much? Is that a perception amongst any Israeli men)?
