Apologies for the non-share-token version but my laptop isn't playing ball.

Labour has said that it will tighten hate crime legislation to make every LGBTQ related hate crime "an aggravated offence". A think tank has rightly pointed out that this risks stifling or silencing debate, saying that to prevent freedom of speech on the matter:

"...was “effectively a transculturalism”, the desire to forcibly impose an ideologically restructured way of thinking and speaking collectively.
The report said: “The movement seeks to sweep away conventionally determined beliefs concerning the nature of existence and to reject the view that language can reflect observable reality. This is a prerequisite for the making of a new order.

“If there is no recognition of our right as individuals to pursue and share with others what we believe to be objectively true, then there is no way for us to democratically and peaceably navigate how we should live as a political community.”

All sounds like reasonable stuff, yes? Except that Labour's response is to call the think tank's comments "nonsense". It then goes on to (rather tenuously) link the think tank to the Liz Truss budget.

"Don't look at what we're doing! Look over there - the PEOPLE WHO MADE YOUR MORTGAGE GO UP!!"

I knew that a leopard wouldn't change it's spots.

Its spots. Not it's spots.

I haven't had any coffee yet...

Have they defined 'hate' yet? Or is it still 'I don't want you to say that/not agree withy make-believe, I'm telling' ?

LizzieSiddal · 23/08/2023 08:05

How are Labour going to ensure GC beliefs continue to be protected if they bring in this law. Or don’t they care?

BettyFilous · 23/08/2023 08:52

In some respects its helpful they’re ploughing on with this because it shows up the disingenuity of their ‘new’ stance on self-ID. Message received Labour!

highame · 23/08/2023 08:54

I knew there would be a back door for Starmer. Just watch the jumble that starts to come out of this. Starmer is a master at obfuscating because he thinks we 'ordinary people' are dumb and wont notice what he's up to. He has the perfect opportunity to confuse because TQ was always meant to muddy the waters. It makes me really nervous letting that man anywhere near something that in all likelihood will affect my rights - watching, waiting

Ohh they care about GC alright, enough to makes new laws against them.

I don’t think they care one jot.

All of this goes to prove what I - and probably many others - suspected. Labour will make all the right noises in the run up to an election but they haven’t changed and are still quite happy to throw women and anyone else with “wrong views” under the trans rights juggernaut.

We can feel confident that their definition won’t include protecting women of the boring old cunty type.

What's the response all about at the end? Nothing to do with the topic:

A Labour source said: “This is nonsense from the organisation that created the blueprint for Liz Truss’s disastrous kamikaze budget which crashed the economy and saddled working people with a mortgage bombshell.”

It's "Look, a squirrel!"

Kilopascal · 23/08/2023 09:38

A blueprint kamikaze saddle bombshell? That's a hell of a mixed metaphor.

Theunamedcat · 23/08/2023 09:40

I cant vote for them ever again can I FFS bunch of idiots

MilkofMagnesia · 23/08/2023 09:43

This is a gift to the Conservatives.

LizzieSiddal · 23/08/2023 09:44

I agree @Theunamedcat but I can’t vote Tory either. Have you seen the thread about Gillian Keegan today? The conservatives started this nonsense, are in power and actively choose not to do anything because it’s a good “wedge” issue for the next election. They don’t care about women or children.

That “whump” noise is the sound of a dead cat being thrown onto the table.

You could ask this about all kinds of beliefs. What about people who are Catholic, or Orthodox Jews, or whatever, and have different beliefs about things like same sex marriage? What about people who don't think sexuality is totally innate?

It sounds like there is still supposed to be a real "crime" involved in these instances, but I think it's more than clear by now what the real downstream effects of hate crime laws are. And honestly that should be a wake-up call, because it was pointed out by astute politicians at the time.

I also think it's likely that if this went forward, we'd eventually see other categories of hate crime also broadened.

LizzieSiddal · 23/08/2023 16:51

No, I’ve had this name for years. Do TooBug and I have similar thoughts on the Tory’s? Theses thoughts are not that unusual!
