I came across this on Twitter today, a post linking to this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/cora-sargeant4/episodes/Episode-12-Conversion-Therapy-e2863ve

The episode starts off by quoting James Esses - who is speaking in a balanced and considered way about gender dysphoria. He was questioning why we don't seek to alleviate the distress linked to distress linked to sexed bodies for those with gender dysphoria.

The podcaster then, presumably trying to show balance, implies - but doesn't state - that James's contribution is in bad faith.

I was hopeful that I would hear arguments linked to what James posed, but instead the framing was that a focus on alleviating distress was a focus on denying someone's identity.

I only listened to the first few minutes - I don't have the patience for this today. However, I noticed there are lots of other episodes, that might be of interest to FWRers.

When I am feeling more resilient, I'll have a listen.

Episode 12: Conversion Therapy by Classroom Psychology

Why do we not 'treat' gender dysphoria as a 'mental health condition' and support people to change their gender identities to alleviate their suffering? We take a look at gender change efforts and the often severe consequences they yield for those subj...

I don’t know when upholding people’s identities (when they’re clearly delusional) became the over riding purpose in everyone’s lives. And just on this issue if sex - if I identify as Napoleon, nobody feels the need to affirm me. It’s fascinating.

This is a common argument OP. It has been used to try to prevent exploratory focused therapy in the conversion therapy bills around the world. Hence why the UK has delayed in this, besides the fact that LGB conversion therapy is already illegal.

It is where ‘affirming only’ therapy has deviated from the Dutch Protocol. And yet the Dutch Protocol is still said to be used… but it is not. And the authors of that protocol have expressed concern that exploratory therapy is being ignored.

I was hopeful that I would hear arguments linked to what James posed, but instead the framing was that a focus on alleviating distress was a focus on denying someone's identity.

The argument is usually that therapy doesn't work for gender dysphoria. They argue that it's not like other conditions like anorexia or the wish to have a limb amputated because 'gender' is such a special thing which is such an important part of these people's lives. When pressed, they insist that it's nothing to do with gender stereotypes, but they can never explain what it actually is.

If you ask for evidence that therapy doesn't work they can't provide any.

The constant attempts at reframing “being trans” as something you are from the currently/previously understood model, where “being trans” was something you did continue to be pushed.

There is no evidence behind this change and it doesn’t fit in with any previous understanding of psychiatric health.

The demanded changes are political rather than evidenced.

I was curious so have looked at what other topics are covered in that series and it seems the host is trying to debunk all the usual hot topics: ROGD, detransition, autism etc.
