When the Lionesses win

Am I the only woman of a certain age to get very emotional when the Lionesses win? I wasn’t allowed to play football at primary school (the boys played football, the girls netball).

I then went to an all girls school - when again football was not played.

I always wanted to play.

And I look at our national team, and am so proud that finally #ThisGirlCan.

I love the Lionesses & have been with my DD's to watch a few matches, we're also regulars at Arsenal ladies matches & DD2 plays football with the girls club at the Emirates.

One of the things I've most enjoyed about this tournament is the way the lionesses congratulate & console the opposing team after the match.

I follow Lotte Wubbon-Moy (Arsenal player & Lioness) on instagram as she started an Arsenal incentive to get girls involved in football as well as talking about mental health & just basically encouraging girls to follow their passions. DD1 was involved in the trial group and it was amazing for her. She has ASC & it was a huge confidence builder & Lotte spent a lot of time with the group, turning up to loads of the sessions.

Arsenal have been breaking new ground, sold out the Emirates for a women's championship league game and have scheduled five league games there next season plus at least three champions league games. A few years ago that would have been unimaginable but winning the Euros changed the game and a World Cup win will crank it up even more. I could see all the Women's Premier League games being played at packed stadiums soon, the boom is happening and no club will want to miss out.

@Heliotroper we've got our 5 Emirates games booked!
I've only started following Arsenal ladies in the last 2 years because of DD2 (we actually live next to the stadium & Arsenal do a lot of outreach at both DDs school!) but both DH & I are as enthusiastic as the DDs now!

Our local women's team have cancelled their match on Sunday, and we're all booked into the pub to watch, nearly all the pubs round here are fully booked.
I think it's disgraceful that Prince William isn't going.

My heart warms when my 26-year-old son wants to be sure we'll be watching 'the World Cup Final' when he comes over this weekend.

For me, one thing that is huge, is I heard someone-I think a commentator, possibly Gabby, say “the Men’s World Cup”.

What a change!

It used to just be “The” World Cup.

I think Alex Scott deserves a huge amount of credit for the role she’s played. I remember when she was still on the England squad and she showed up on CBeebies, encouraging children to play sport. It seemed like she was consciously trying to be a role-model for the next generation of girls, trying to normalise the idea of women’s football. At the time it was so depressing how women would be playing to empty stadiums.
