Wes Streeting on trans/gender issues and the SNP

ArabeIIaScott · 10/08/2023 23:12

Recent reports on interview with Iain Dale.

'Only last month, UK Labour backtracked on their commitment to Self-ID and with it their support for Holyrood's Gender Recognition Reform (GRR) Bill. Now Mr Streeting says the Bill failed to look at the worst-case scenarios and is "a really good example of what happens if you only ever legislate with good intentions."'

'Mr Streeting said he thought they "have actually set the cause of LGBT rights back”.'

'He added: “I’ve got plenty of hard criticisms to make with the SNP. But on the gender recognition reforms, I would cite their Bill as a really good example of what happens if you only ever legislate with good intentions and don’t legislate for the worst-case scenario, the risks and challenges that are presented. Had they listened to the opposition a bit more, it would be better, and we can learn from that at UK level.”'

Streeting: Toxicity of debates over transgender rights is getting worse

The shadow health secretary said the differences between Scottish Labour and the UK party on the issue were ‘subtle’.

'Mr Streeting also said any differences between Scottish labour and the UK party on transgender rights are “subtle”'

He claims to be a 'bridge builder' and says he got abuse after discussing Rosie Duffield recently.

Reddit Labour's response is ... not very subtle.

Labour haven’t been listening to women for many years. I know he apologised to Rosie a few weeks ago but he should repeat that apology and an apology to GC women, every time he talks about “not listening”.

I am pleased to hear they now realise self ID does indeed lead to “worst case scenarios.” But, No Shit Sherlock springs to mind.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 11/08/2023 08:09

Well he’s not wrong is he? they didn’t listen & they didn’t consider worse case scenarios

ResisterRex · 11/08/2023 08:10

Wow, that thread is quite revealing. Shows there's no appeasement. The Labour position allows for at least the "spousal veto" nonsense, and really permits self-ID as all you need is a friendly Dr to do the honours. They'll never be happy with anything less than total capitulation.

‘Worst case scenarios’ were never extreme, unlikely outliers though. They were just entirely predictable and predicted events based on everything we know about male pattern sex offending, aggression and opportunism. They were always and definitely going to happen, repeatedly.

Indeed, the total capitulation thing will be their downfall.

I'd like to see Wes Streeting apologise for the hounding that he took part in, but I'm glad he's turned around.
Weren't Scottish Labour whipped to vote on the GRR bill? Bit ripe of him to criticise the SNP if that was the case.
That thread is something though. Such vitriol. And then you come on MN where there is nothing like that, and we're supposedly the hateful ones.

Is that the mainstream Reddit for the Labour Party or is it the TQ Labour Reddit? There doesn’t appear to be anyone other than TQ activists on it.

If that Reddit is a reflection of what it’s like in local constituency groups you can see why any candidate would be terrified to say anything that might bring that sort of abuse from TQ activists raining down on them.

Helleofabore · 11/08/2023 08:52

Does that mean we are spot on target to remain suspicious of the weasel wording from the Labour Party then? Because Wes says they are not really that different from Scottish Labour?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/08/2023 09:00

It's the main Labour subreddit. I imagine due to the unfair, partisan moderation of this issue that most other people give the trans threads a wide berth.

Manderleyagain · 11/08/2023 09:30

It's an incredible read. It makes me think he is actually brave to start to try and turn this around if this is in any way indicative of party activists. Hopefully it's only a small number of chronicle online people. It definitely shows how brave Rosie & Tonia have been. What a terrible environment to operate in! There is some violence, some wishing him to cease to exist, some projecting violent intent onto him, and lots of horrible insult especially the c word and quisling type insults. If it was a woman there would be a different set of insults.
How has the labour party allowed this mode of behaviour to become even a little but established?

TheirEminence · 11/08/2023 09:45

I have contacted my Labour MP a few times and any ‘listening’ that she did was entirely performative.

Also, GC women do not just want to be listened to (like a stereotypical noughties wine mom who likes to rant over a glass of Chardonnay), we’d like our well-founded concerns and political demands to be implemented in policy. Listening is a start but it’s not enough.

It's pretty taking-aback. Reading that I'm quite surprised at how bloody vicious, vindictive and vituperative the Right Side of History is, tbh.

Is Streeting gay, btw?

I agree.

As soon as people realise that unless they cave on absolutely everything, they're the scum of the earth, they conclude they might as will be hung for a sheep as a lamb.

If you're going to lose 100% of your TRA support by even a half hearted stab at being moderate, there's no one left to appease.

and the foot shooting goes on.

I just googled, and he is engaged to a male partner, to answer my own question.

Streeeting wants to pretend that by changing a few words " row back on /Self ID" that people will actually believe that Labour have. The problem is, as we see on this board, there are many keen Labour voters who are desperate, and relieved, to hear that - and are prepared to take him at his word.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/08/2023 10:12

The LabourUK subreddit is a deranged echo chamber on this issue, I suspect, as I said, that most normal members avoid the trans threads, and also that there are non Labour members stirring the pot in there too, there seem to be members of the greens, Sinn Fein and the SNP in there too.

And Reddit is quite a misogynistic site anyway.

RebelliousCow · 11/08/2023 10:19

This is the level at which political discourse exists, today

LizzieSiddal · 11/08/2023 10:49

I was glad to see the “Starmer hates trans people” banner. I’m sure Starmer and his posse thought how ridiculous it was and maybe, just maybe got an inkling into what many GC women have faced when they dare to say anything remotely sensible re this topic.

woopdedoodle · 11/08/2023 12:32

"TransPeopleAreLoved."

Thats what I picked up on, I mean I've never seen another group stating that.
And who by, family, a handful of close friends, the entire world?

Anyway back to Labour, I want clear definitions of woman and female before they get a sniff of my vote. And that goes for all parties.
