Transphobia in the garden

Tell me how you'd know the gender identity of this skeleton? How outrageous for the guardian to be so obsessed with this person's genitals https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/jul/27/isles-of-scilly-remains-iron-age-female-warrior-grave-bryher-sword-mirror

I kid you not. They described the person as both female and a woman. But the person was a warrior so clearly was a transman, right?

Isles of Scilly remains are iron age female warrior, scientists say

I'm not sure about the mirrors as signalling devices theory. The Romans were very hot on describing the military practices of their opponents and AFAIK never mentioned this.

But the Romans used mirrors - once all the necessary towers etc. were in place, it apparently took about 9 hours to get a message from Hadrian’s Wall to Rome! So why wouldn’t Iron Age peoples have used mirrors in a similar way?

Do you have a reliable source for that?

There is a theory from 1909 that the emperor Tiberius used mirrors for communication, but even the theory's author had to admit that there were no.kentions of this in ancient writing.

I honestly cannot see anything wring with this article at all. Are you just looking for something to get angry about ?

I don’t see anything in the article implying that this woman was a transman.

Surely it is interesting to find this woman may have been a warrior.

Though I should think there is also the possibility that the sword and mirror could be symbolical of a role, status or moral or spiritual idea too.

There have been some other burials where women were found with weapons too.

It didn't. This is the weirdest thread I've ever seen. People actively looking for something that they hate to be there when it isn't?!

You could RTFT.

Or i could repeat my earlier post, explaining that we're not angry, we're having a laugh at the Guardian's expense

We're expressing mock surprise that the paper didn't claim the body with grave goods normally associated with male and female burials was transgender or non-binary.

Fortunately the source material was sensible.

The Grauniad has, in the past, published stories like this:

1,000-year-old remains in Finland may be non-binary iron age leader

DNA suggests body buried in feminine attire with swords had Klinefelter syndrome, researchers say

Mirrors also featured in Etruscan culture.

Yes, and as soon as I saw the mirror , I was reminded of Etruscan mirrors ( of which a large number survive). Given that the Isles would have been a stopping off point in trade voyages, I think this is most likely a ‘high status’ object, which would most likely end up in the possession of a ‘ high status’ person. It’s not as if many of these mirrors have been found in Britain.

‘I honestly cannot see anything wring with this article at all.’

One wring to rule them all, One wring to bind them…..

PriamFarrl · 27/07/2023 16:05

But hang on. This person was dressed in clothes that are traditionally seen on men. That makes them a man, surely? It couldn’t be that those clothes were the most convenient for what they were doing.

I saw a post on Twitter the other day about a doctor in the 1800 that no one realised was actually a woman until they died. This was seen as proof that there has always been trans people and not anything to do with the oppression of women.

Either putting on different clothes magically changes your sex or it doesn’t. You can’t have it both ways.

The Guardian would have us believe that a man who puts on a dress is actually a woman. So this person is a woman who has put on traditionally male clothes. Therefore, following their own logic, they are a man.

It's very like all the other Iron Age mirrors found so far in Britain, some 60 of them, such as those in the British Museum or the Birdlip mirror or the Portesham mirror, or the Desborough mirror.

The techniques used are similar to those used in the crafting of other objects such as torcs, shields, swords, drinking vessels and so on.

Circumferences · 27/07/2023 17:23

It's right to be mightily pissed off at an article like this given what utter bullshit the Guardian has pedalled for so long.

It's not an outrageous article it really isn't. But the content is very much

"tell me you've changed your tune without telling me you've changed you're tune so you can escape ever saying sorry" ... Or in fact just leave everyone dangling so you can be woman hating all over again.

FreedomFromFoundation · 27/07/2023 18:17

YANBU, OP. Disgusting transphobia here. Until we know this person's favourite animée-based avatar, we have no idea whether or not they is a woman. Guardian - DO BETTER.

Dr Alice Roberts must have had her mobile on airplane mode when this came out.

No one is angry at the article, we’re just surprised that it is nice and sensible given past work.

parietal · 27/07/2023 19:13

I wonder why having a mirror makes someone female. Rather than wanting to shave a beard.

literalviolence · 27/07/2023 19:22

I'm actually angry at their playing with definitions and words whilst continuing to harass, belittle and demean women tbh. 7

Either 'woman' is about identity, in which case we don't know that this person is a woman. OR, 'woman' is about biology, in which case Eddie Izzard is a man.

You can't have it both ways.
