Carol Midgely in the Times. Share token link below. She absolutely gets hope offensive the language is. Mumsnet even gets a mention in the article to top things off.

Oh yes. The good ol' Jo's Cervical Cancer trust who claim to help "people or anyone with a cervix". Hmm... Which people are these then?

A quick look at their website reveals that the words "woman" or "female" is totally absent.

You didn't have a very good look then. This was the first thing I clicked a random:

The cervix

The cervix is inside the body as a part of the female reproductive system. It joins the top of the vagina to the lower part of the womb.

Doesn't detract from the fact that the website uses an infantilising, insulting and demeaning word to refer to the anatomy of the majority of its clientele.

Can anyone imagine men putting up with this shit and showing their penises to be renamed 'sperm depositors' or the like? In case the word penis upsets a trans man?No of course they wouldn't 🙄

This isn't inclusivity, its misogyny.

IcakethereforeIam · 12/07/2023 12:03

Probably wouldn't be allowed to use the word 'sperm' because tm being female can't produce any. Waiting until supermarkets stop selling eggs, and start calling them chicken ova. Actually, I can't wait for it all to be ova.

caramac04 · 12/07/2023 12:17

I don’t have the words to adequately express how offended I, a woman, am by this horrible term. The vagina is a complex and wonderful organ which allows for the fertilisation of eggs and birth of babies. Yes I know some women identify as men and some women have eggs fertilised outside of their body and some women have caesarean sections to deliver their babies but that doesn’t mean a vagina is anything other than a vagina.

mach2 · 12/07/2023 20:44

Female friends of mine are livid about this. I think I've peaked one of them by helpfully informing them about "womb-havers" and "menstruators" (she doesn't keep up with current affairs) and topping it off with a link to Jo's.

Bonus hole sounds like a porn word.

BaronMunchausen · 12/07/2023 21:30

It does sound like a porn phrase. Gender ideology has significant roots in porn. Bonus for whom, exactly?
Cui 'bonus'? Homo erectus?

LostMySocks · 12/07/2023 21:34

I've previously heard bonus hole being used by trans identified females when discussing how gay men should accept them as partners.

Grammarnut · 12/07/2023 21:57

My DH just came across this 'bonus hole' thing and said how demeaning. Can't but agree with him.

HelenaTranscart · 15/07/2023 12:53

I thought the article was a joke at first because the idea of calling a vagina a 'bonus hole' is so utterly ridiculous ... but it's true and it's yet another outrageous and demeaning example of the cancelling of women and all things female.

But it's not enough to rant here so I'm off to vent my anger on their website. If you support this charity, please stop and give your well-intentioned and much-needed funds to one that respects women (you know, the real ones with 2 X chromosomes).

This letter was in my local paper. We are in Keir Starmer's constituency and I bet he reads the Camden New Journal as it is a very activist, lefty paper

This is misleading because they're not using that word or proposing that we should rename the vagina.

The term was included on a glossary of terms that for professionals providing care to transgender people, to explain some of the terms patients might use:

https://www.jostrust.org.uk/professionals/health-professionals/nurse-gp/trans-non-binary/language

It doesn't appear anywhere else on the website. The correct word - vagina - is used throughout, for example:

https://www.jostrust.org.uk/information/cervical-screening/what-happens-during-cervical-screening

So a bit of a non-issue, really?

I personally find the term 'bonus hole' hugely offensive, and would be rightly outraged if it was ever used in an appointment. But I also think that it's important that people who identify as transgender men who have not had their cervixes removed should be supported to attend regular screenings, which are essential healthcare for all biological females who haven't had their cervixes removed.

What happens at cervical screening?

Many people are worried about going for cervical screening (smear test) for lots of reasons. We can walk you through what happens before, during and after your appointment, as well as give some helpful tips to make the test better for you.

Part of the problem is that the offensive phrase sounds like it originated with a handful of porn-addled activists. But these are the people that organisations speak to.

The "bonus" is a bonus for men who want sex.

And men no more have a "bonus hole" than they have a vagina.

I agree that it is an awful phrase.

But it is disingenuous to drag a charity who works hard to prevent cervical cancer and support women living with it through the mud, suggesting they are trying to "rebrand" vaginas, because they have included it on one page (which is focused on the terminology people identifying as transgender men may use/prefer when undergoing screening).

I think focusing on non-issues like this, and spreading misinformation about organisations that work hard to support women's health issues, isn't any better than when TRAs fail to acknowledge nuance in their arguments.

dragonbreaths · 26/07/2023 19:32

they shouldn't publish absolute shit then

Sadly they are reflecting the language of a certain demographic (or at least they believe they are - whether any transman actually uses this terminology is, in my view, questionable…). So kind of justifiable in that sense.

Otherwise, it’s clearly a horrible porn-soaked phrase.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 26/07/2023 19:41

dragonbreaths · 26/07/2023 19:32

When charities lose sight of who they are and instead sign up to offensive anti women language (claiming that transmen are so repelled by their women's bodies that they adopt porn soaked language) then they become part of the problem, not the solution.
So much harm being done to so many charities at the behest of narrow minded, single issue, porn addled, anti women activists.
Do better.

Kim Anami, who writes a lot about the female orgasm and sex, and who is a “Vaginal weightlifter!” has done a podcast on this. I’ve not listened to it yet, but her show notes are angry.
