He's got no idea, the Government has no position on this despite it being in upcoming legislation. He thinks it will be decided in the Seanad debates 🙄

The Gnostics have to make a final declaration.

JacquelinePot · 27/06/2023 12:17

Nevermind how many "genders", can someone ask these people what it is, please?

Lightningstrikess · 27/06/2023 13:24

Gript, Daily Mail, Times & Telegraph keep the fire lit!

Lightningstrikess · 27/06/2023 13:26

And Leo wouldn't answer... Makes you wonder what exactly is coming up in the Seanad?...

LonginesPrime · 27/06/2023 13:45

"There isn't an official position on that but I'm sure it will be debated"

If it's based on actual scientific fact, why on Earth would the number of genders need to be debated?

It makes sense to debate things like "ok, how should we treat this class of people in law?", but why are they wasting their time debating whether or not the group of people they're seeking to protect in law actually exists in the first place?

Do the people identifying as the tenth gender exist, according to the government? Should they be protected? What about the people who identify as the eleventh gender, and the 36th?

Are the needs of all these groups identical? Is it even appropriate to apply the same legislation to some who identifies as female gender and someone who identifies as non-binary? What about water gender and star gender?

What kind of legislative process starts having no idea of whether the class of people they are trying to protect actually exists? How can they possibly propose that legislation is needed before they have established the needs and characteristics of the class of people the law is being proposed to protect?

Er... isn't he a medical doctor?

Lightningstrikess · 27/06/2023 13:56

Yes he is

fifeefifoo · 27/06/2023 15:17

Wow just wow!

Probably have, maybe have about 9 genders? What on earth does that mean.

What is a gender? Please someone explain this to me.

How can we protect in law something that is in someone's head and can change day to day.

Given whats been happening in UK schools, they need to clarify things like "is cat a gender"? TBH they seem to be making a rod for their civil/public servants backs

He was asked a few days ago about comments made in the Seanad about this legislation where the interpretations of what this law is are quite something and he was just like "I couldn't comment as I haven't heard the remarks". Unless its the Government defining these terms whats said in the Seanad debates on it won't mean anything.
I'm not a fan of Gripts ideology but fair play to them for asking these questions, the fact the rest of the Irish media isn't causing a fuss about this Bill is such a dereliction of duty

Varadkar is very fond of the “I didn’t hear the remarks”, “I wasn’t aware of that”, “I’m sure it’ll be fine”, style of comment when asked about these issues. It was the same thing from him when he was asked about men being housed in women’s prisons. He seems to know feck all about what his ministers are doing in terms of policy & legislation - it makes him look clueless, and unfeeling, in my opinion.

Lottapianos · 27/06/2023 15:30

Jesus, what an eejit. You can see him thinking 'oh shit' as soon as the word 'gender' is mentioned - ha!

Especially when the remarks they're talking about made international news, there was a feature about it on Fox news, there is no way he didn't hear them. He seems to love (im) plausible deniability

How transphobic of him.
#no debate
😉

RealityFan · 27/06/2023 17:42

They really just have gone into the "<shoulder shrug>, don't ask me, how the fuck would I know, I'm only promoting the law, it's really not my problem, hey, can we talk about wheat yields data instead" yada yada.

The drab body language and verbal/conceptual disconnectedness of this ideology capture is just so depressing and empty to watch.

Lightningstrikess · 27/06/2023 17:44

I'd say Leo & all the gang curse inwardly when they see John McGuirk from Gript.ie he really sticks it to them 🤣

Exactly!! He's basically saying "What are yiz asking me for, I'm only the Taoiseach. What would I know about what's going on?"

And it's his complete lack of curiosity or interest in what he's being questioned about - he shrugs the question off and hopes his lack of interaction will kill it as a topic of interest. If we had a decent media landscape, the other journalists would notice his reluctance to discuss these things and they would all start questioning him about it. But, of course, Irish journalists wouldn't demean themselves by questioning the establishment consensus 🙄
