Cbeebies

Did anyone else have cbeebies on this morning? During one of the segments between cartoons, the dog puppet gave a little spiel about (paraphrasing) how amazing clownfish are because they can change gender, and apparently there's another type of fish too that changes from male to female as it gets older, blah blah blah, isn't nature amazing!

I forget some of the details, but I noticed the "clownfish change their gender" line because it just struck me as wrong. Like, I've heard about clownfish changing their sex before, but they surely don't have a gender identity to change.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else saw this, and also what people make of it. Obviously the clownfish thing is a trans talking point, which I'm kind of ambivalent about. I'm guessing this is part of the BBC's pride programming, and in principle I am ok with fact-based 'here are different families, people, etc.'-level stuff, but I'm also uncomfortable with the insertion of gender. When plenty of adults can't agree on how universal 'gender identity' is, it seems a bit bold to be introducing it as fact on cbeebies. Is this just me?

I would have thought Cbeebies would have been squeamish about using the word 'sex'. I suspect that happens in a lot of situations, creating the illusion that the terms are interchangeable.

It’s this isn’t it. They couldn’t have said “biological sex” though and potentially opened up a conversation around what that is. I’d happily explain it to my three year old if he heard that term on CBeebies.

Sorry, can't see this one. Presumably this was the the intro segment before a cartoon - likely octonaughts? I'm guessing the episode was about clownfish. Happy to be corrected but this would be completely normal random little facts about sea life we get every morning before this show...

And they definitely wouldn't say the word sex on cbeebies! Though perhaps they ought to? Who knows

Appears to have been inbetween episodes of Hey Duggee, so not leading into a related Octonauts episode.

That sounds worse than the time I saw on CBeebies a hamster eat their own children... I don't think either is suitable for 3 year olds.

Between this & Innocent Smoothies.. They need to keep away from the kids ffs.. Enough is enough. Boycott, boycott, boycott...
Hit them all where it hurts, their bottom line, it's all they care about at the end of the day.. Money (or lack of money) talks...

Fair enough then, that's clearly political. 3yo doesn't watch anymore which is a relief as half the shows are very very dull. She likes to choose things on Netflix so at least I will have some control over propaganda

It's ridiculous that kids can't watch a bit of telly without being indoctrinated... Babysitters club (new version) is the same both book & tv series.

Well, perhaps trying to shoehorn the concept of sequential hermaphroditism into a pre school children's programme was a bad idea then? Someone should have perhaps realised that when scripting this segment.

And as the video posted by @oldwhyno makes the point, what has the sequential hermaphroditism of some fish got to do with humans and LGBT+ pride month?

Well, they'll claim with a straight face that they're just teaching children a bit of interesting science, but the fact that the BBC told pinknews that it was in support of pride month reveals the real motive. They want to i) familiarise children with the notion of changing sex, ii) conflate sex and gender, and iii) relate it to the children by using terms like "boy fish" and "girl fish".

I'm taking an involuntary leave of absence from Reddit for trying to help people understand that it's ideological grooming.
