Twitter safety chief resigns after misgendering row

Twitter’s head of safety has resigned hours after Elon Musk criticised staff at the social network for cracking down on a video that “misgendered” trans people.

Ella Irwin, who has led Twitter’s trust and safety efforts for most of Mr Musk’s time there, confirmed to Reuters that she had resigned from the company.

She did not elaborate on her departure, but it came after Mr Musk said staff at the company had mistakenly limited the reach of a video by the conservative news organisation The Daily Wire.

Jeremy Boreing, co-founder of The Daily Wire, said Twitter had backtracked on a deal to let the news site promote a feature-length documentary about gender issues called What Is a Woman?.

He said that Twitter had refused to let the publication pay to advertise the film, would limit its reach and labelled it as “hateful conduct”. The measures meant the film would not show up in algorithmic recommendations, even to people who follow the account, while the hateful conduct label means users must click through to watch it.

Mr Musk said: “This was a mistake by many people at Twitter. It is definitely allowed.

“Whether or not you agree with using someone’s preferred pronouns, not doing so is at most rude and certainly breaks no laws.”

However, he said the film will not feature alongside Twitter advertising. “Advertisers have the right to decide what content their ads appear with, which will impact reach to some degree,” he said.

Well...Musk seems very reasonable here. Can totally understand why he's limiting it with advertisers too.

goes to sit in the "hate" corner

Compare and contrast with the BBC's reporting

Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Ella.

HarrietJet · 02/06/2023 18:07

I'd say Ella will be sorely missed. Bless..

So the tldr is Twitter staff who aren't "gender critical" are leaving out of protest.

IwantToRetire · 02/06/2023 18:22

I didn't know this was the 2nd one to resign, and not being in any way a fan of EM, it seems it could be like those at the EHRC who thought their trans analysis was the organisations postion (rather than them using their position to promote it) flouncing out and spreading rumours of bullying etc..

But it might also explain why twitter for no apparent reason caved in to the Australian eCommissioner demand that they delight Reduxx article links.

Will be interesting to see who will be the next Safety Chief, or whether EM just wont bother.

Oh, I'm sure you've read it very carefully Merlin 😂

Could be positive for democracy and free speech if the current cohort of witch finders are in retreat. Women may be allowed to speak about safeguarding children, rights, women's sport etc without the new Victorians trying to stop us?

No. But you knew that

ATerrorofLeftovers · 02/06/2023 18:31

The reasons for this particular resignation we can only speculate about. Though if it were the case that people against free speech were leaving Twitter, that would very much be a positive development.

PurpleBugz · 02/06/2023 18:32

Just seen Elon musk himself has tweeted

"Every parent should watch this" with the what is a woman film

He can't make his position much clearer really can he

Oh no how terrible!

Theeyeballsinthesky · 02/06/2023 19:14

Yes it must be gutting Merlin that twitter no longer instantly bans for people for pointing out that allowing men into women’s spaces on the basis of self ID 🪪 is a bad thing

GailBlancheViola · 02/06/2023 19:27

Head of Safety hmm, safety of what?

She'd only worked there a year. If she hadn't gone to the press, no one would know. Let's hope she can find another job. With a reputation of running to the press the moment things don't go her way, that might not be easy

Boiledbeetle · 02/06/2023 20:03

Going to admit i watched it again today just on principle! At that point it had had i think 8.9Miliion clicks into the video.

Chances are it was watched and tweeted more than if that woman had just let it stand.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 02/06/2023 20:37

The fact that The Daily Wire had been told that not misgendering was still Twitter company policy despite it having been removed from the written rules is concerning

these were people who’d just got used to forcing their own personal views down the general public’s throat

That's what's so great about recent events like this isn't it?! They end up peaking more people because of how they are acting

I know it's great isn't it! They do the work for us!

JanesLittleGirl · 02/06/2023 21:22

It must be upsetting when someone takes away a 'safe space'. Welcome to our world.

How sad, but I guess it's time for them to move on if they can't deal with dissenting views.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 02/06/2023 21:30

I must say twitter sounds like it was a right old mess. Probably a dreadful place to work if you had any kind of realistic understanding of sex

i don’t think Musk is all that great but it would be hard to fuck it up further

Bit off topic, but what was it that convinced you that the idea of gender and the associated stereotyping should be beyond criticism?
