Good article.

'it’s becoming much harder to maintain the pretence that gender identity isn’t all about stereotypes, no matter how manipulative you are with words'

Here come the new gender stereotypes, same as the old gender stereotypes | Victoria Smith | The Critic Magazine

They aren’t subversive or ironic; they’re just silly…

Thanks for the share. I too went through the whole girl power I'm totally empowered by dressing slutty and being promiscuous. It was fine, I had fun but I certainly didn't end sexism by doing it.

I've just finished Hags by Victoria Smith, it's an excellent book. She talks about the cyclical nature of feminism; how the next generation always want to start again, forget the older women who went before.

In part I think it's to do with hormones, you know when you're young and virile you want to own that, feel empowered by feeling sexy. It's not till you've had kids that you think 'hang about, what happened to equality?!

I am about to start Hags.
She is such a good writer.

I always find with her writing, I start and read some of it and then go off and do something else and come back to it later to prolong the experience of reading it.

A great article. Halfway through Hags - excellent so far.

Lovely way of writing. Wry and waspish.
