I know Jordan Peterson is not everyone's cup of tea but this long interview is well worth a watch. She is an amazing individual, showing real courage in the face of the trans mob (mob is not an exaggeration) and the demented sports bodies that have betrayed and gaslight women's sport.

Thanks for this. Will watch tomorrow.

ParadiseLaundry · 11/05/2023 21:56

Ooh, thanks, I'll give this a watch.

And for the record, I love Jordan Peterson! I found his recent podcast with Naomi Wolf really interesting and they actually disagreed on a lot of things, it was a great listen.

RealityFan · 11/05/2023 23:21

One thing is guaranteed. Riley will be recorded as a hero while Lia Thomas will be no more than a footnote in history.

AngeloMysterioso · 11/05/2023 23:39

It’s got an impressive number of views already considering it’s only been up since this afternoon.

Annoyingly, when you search for Riley Gaines on YouTube, the third video in the list is a fucking fawning ESPN interview with Thomas.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 13/05/2023 19:04

It's a fascinating listen. Riley is very impressive & Peterson makes no secret of his fury at what's happening.

Truthlikeness · 13/05/2023 19:52

It was an interesting watch, particularly hearing the detail of the whole situation. E.g. Riley and her coach couldn't work out how an older student had come out of nowhere, from a college never known to produce good swimmers to win freestyle races at every length with record times. How indeed....

raspberrywine · 13/05/2023 21:17

JP always seems to get so much out of his interviewees and I really liked how he set up the interview so we got to know about Riley - what drives her, her dedication, resilience and the sacrifices she had to make to compete at that level. And how Leah Thomas waltzed in trampled all over her and other women swimmers.

It was chilling to hear about the emotional blackmailing and reprogramming sessions his teammates had to go to every week having to compete with him and share a locker room with him, especially for the young woman who had been sexually assaulted when younger. Thinking about the pictures of him being surrounded by the ecstatic young women comes across as even more sinister now.

I hope that the women talk to JP and let the world know how much they had to suffer - although I wouldn't blame them if they didn't.

There should be a class action suit against NCAA and the college. As for Leah Thomas, they need to expunge his records etc. JP's rage at narcissistic Leah Thomas and his idiot imbecilic enablers was palpable.

EmmaEmerald · 13/05/2023 22:09

Is there a key section to watch in terms of Lia coming from nowhere?

2 hours is very long and I do find JP never uses two words when he can use fifty instead.

raspberrywine · 13/05/2023 22:23

It is about 50 minutes in.

I'm 59, hoping to get to 89. What I'm wondering is whether sometime before I turn 89 the tide will have turned, so I can look back and say "WTF happened back then?", and be proud I absolutely took a stand, even if only looking in the mirror, that I didn't capitulate to the biggest car crash and bin fire that Western liberals ever tried to foist on the world.

turbonerd · 13/05/2023 22:42

A very informative interview.
Riley Gaines is formidable, and everything she talks about shows up the crazy, authoritarian T for what it is.

Very scary stuff, I hope this reaches far and wide.
JP is a very interesting interviewer. Intelligent and not afraid to let his own reactions show when this insanity is laid bare.

toomanytrees · 14/05/2023 00:44

This is a very interesting interview. Riley is articulate and persuasive. Peterson has Riley describe in detail her life history, what it takes to become an elite athlete and what the social, emotional and competitive world of these women is like. The sudden inclusion of Thomas blew all the certainties about their sport out of the water. Peterson interjects with no holds barred pyschological explanations and impacts.

What I wish was addressed in greater detail was WHO did this. Who were the coaches, the college employees, the sport officials and such who effectively blackmailed a group of female athletes to not only graciously accept the their lost competitive standings, but also be victims of sexual abuse in the form of voyeurism and flashing. (To get round the problem of sex segregated locker rooms, the officials at one meet smugly declared all locker rooms unisex!)

I hope in future that names will be named and charges brought or lawsuits filed for what these women had to endure. Kudos to Riley for her grit and determination to take this on.

PattyDuckface · 14/05/2023 01:09

It's such a brilliant interview. Jordan is so angry on her behalf and for all of us. Criminal is how he describes the government, the officials, the trainers, the sports bodies, the universities and everyone else who enabled this betrayal of women.

I also like how it's like a televised therapy session where he asks in detail about Riley's psyche. He gets a lot of excellent details about what has actually happened to her.

It's an amazing document of this new sexism and misogyny that again tramples on women's lives.

MavisMcMinty · 14/05/2023 03:15

Just watched it, very powerful. What’s Riley doing now, is she still swimming? Sounds like her speaking schedule is extensive, and not conducive to training? Not sure how anyone could face training knowing they’ll lose to a man no matter how hard they work. I do hope Thomas’s records are wiped from the books, they may never be broken as they stand.

EmmaEmerald · 14/05/2023 09:56

"What I wish was addressed in greater detail was WHO did this"

yes, I haven't watched all of it, but the photo opp point is particularly interesting. What was the reason for wanting that photo opp? Could go either way.

Inamuddle36 · 14/05/2023 10:09

A couple of thoughts te the interview:

  1. the explanation of sport competition being “fair” when athletes compete against others of similar characteristics and similar level of training made me think of the Paralympics as an analogy. The categories in the Paralympics are strictly defined (ie partially sighted vs partially sighted; fully blind vs fully blind; etc). Presumably, if a person who can see “feels” he is visually impaired, he can’t compete against partially sighted or blind athletes?! So why should men who “feel” they are women be allowed to compete against women? (Possible answer, I can imagine: “they don’t “feel” they are women; they “ARE” women)

2)re the locker room anecdote (women swimmers were told they had to accept Thomas, a trans woman with intact male genitalia) in the locker room because the locker rooms had been re-classified as unisex: I wish the women had responded by all going to the male locker room and changed there… or some of the make
swimmers had had the courage to go to the women’s locker room to test whether it was really unisex.

  1. I would rather hear more from Riley and less from JP…

She finished college. I'm not sure if she still swims competitively. It was mentioned that swimming is a short career that favours the young, so I think the expectation was that you stop after college if you're presumably not world class. Riley was very good, but not quite Olympic standard, I believe.
She will be going to dental school, but is taking a year out to campaign for women's sports.
I am enormously grateful to women like Riley and the others putting their head above the parapets to fight for us all. It's extremely difficult for many reasons.

FrippEnos · 14/05/2023 10:36

It will be interesting to see if any of the colleges or TRAs try to block her entrance into dental school.

BettyFilous · 14/05/2023 18:56

It was a good interview, despite its length. Riley was given plenty of space to expand on her experiences and Jordan asked insightful questions. Jordan was so furious he was swearing regularly by the end. Props to Riley for getting up for a 4am slot (Riley in the US, JP in Portugal). All those years of training before school have stayed with her.

Short video clip from Riley. She claims that were forced into "mandatory LGBTQ education meetings".

She's describing grooming! Those young women having their boundaries systematically eroded by their university to accept the naked body of a random male in their presence without their consent..
This is precisely how predators work - repeatedly minimising, bullying, making the individual the problem, removing their power and language to speak out.

Unbelievable.

Offering them therapy to get comfortable with being exposed to. That's as "gaslighting" as it gets.

In practice, when Lia had beaten a member of the men's team, the coach said, "You just let a girl beat you!".
