Focussing on the podcast, which I haven't got round to listening to yet.

I'll listen on catch up. Presume he still believes TWAW

He's snorting so yes.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/04/2023 17:37

Yes, I think he does. Ah well.

It's being framed as the trans debate, when it's the womens rights debate (if it must be called a debate).

Littlesprouts · 11/04/2023 17:40

What did he just say at the end about the "ambiguous title"? It sounded like he was getting a dig in but I didn't understand what he said. Along the lines of 'some people think she's a victim and some think she's leading a mob'? He mumbled a bit in his hurry to get it in.

I've little time for anyone who doesn't get the title of the podcast to be honest.

Oddly he very much seemed to be championing 'no debate' which is curious from a journalist.

Genesis1v27 · 11/04/2023 17:41

The segment started around 25 minutes in.

Bunshaped · 11/04/2023 17:41

By "ambiguous title" I take it to mean it could either be a witch hunt against JKR or a witch hunt led by JKR.

ValancyRedfern · 11/04/2023 17:42

He very much believes any debate is 'existential' to trans people, but entirely inconsequential for JK and women in general. He was trying not to be too blatant in his views but they came through loud and clear.

Bunshaped · 11/04/2023 17:43

I liked when M P-R said good journalism means everyone needs to feel heard.

Yes, Evan, everyone.

Abhannmor · 11/04/2023 17:45

Davies can't resist saying the Witch Trials of JKR might be a misnomer. Some would say she's not on trial but conducting them he says.

So no change there. She made the point the conversation is happening anyway. In other words No Debate is over.

This bit made me shout at the radio. A total twisting of the podcast title, making out that it has an ambiguous meaning because as well as referring to JKR being on trial, many people "of course" believe that her views are a "witch trial" of trans people.

Naturally he said that at the end so MPR had no opportunity to respond.

Bunshaped · 11/04/2023 17:50

He probably thinks that's presenting a "balanced viewpoint".

A balanced witch trial.

MissMarplesbag · 11/04/2023 17:53

Evan Davies is an absolute misogynistic bell end. I can't stand the odious little twerp.

Sausagenbacon · 11/04/2023 17:59

I thought it was a waste of time, as I hadn't heard much about the podcast and it's not clear, and not made clear, what her angle is.
Plus it seems to come from the USA experience of gc women being attacked by the right-wing churches. Which just isn't relevant in the UK, where the attack is from the Left.
I'm aware that I'm coming across as ignorant, but that is the position most listeners will have been in.

PotteringPondering · 11/04/2023 18:19

The interview is with the wonderful Megan Phelps-Roper. Even if Evan had to get his dig in, it will have achieved two things:

• Alerted the Radio 4 audience to The Witch Trials of JK Rowling podcast, where JKR explains her position at length. If you haven't listened in, it's fabulous.
• Introduced people to Megan Phelps-Roper herself, who is a model of how to debate civilly with people you passionately disagree with (given her own background in the rabid Westboro Baptist Church). Megan's clear inference is that it's JKR who is the victim of a witch hunting mob.

IwantToRetire · 11/04/2023 18:22

I hoped someone would post a thread about this, but did also hope that it would be titled as so many of the recent threads have been, Radio 4 showing bias again.

Would just make it quicker to add them up as 2 or 3 times last week they had interviews were only trans were given a voice, and the same today. Trans allowed to say how awful it was, but no woman allowed to say how significant JKR has been for women's rights.

No time to find the other threads now, but worth searching for, as despite complaints it is almost as though the BBC is thumbing it nose ata GC / sex based rights politics by continuing on their prime news shows (WATO & PM) to only give a voice to the trans agenda.

Of course the interview was twaddle. Would it be anything else with ED.

faffadoodledo · 11/04/2023 18:36

Hopefully it's just alerted liars more people to a really interesting and informative podcast. It gives brilliant background to how the debate (to put it politely) has revved up. It doesn't paint a pretty picture. So yes, good. Gets it out there

I’m waiting for the article on Taylor Swift’s relationship status and how men are threatened by successful women …

Also haven’t got round to the JKR podcast yet.

That piece was odd. Relationships break up more often if the woman is richer , more successful. But why?

Enter psychiatrist. It's because men hate being less wealthy - and it's getting worse over time.

Why does it upset them so much ?
Beats me I just don't get it . Well evolutionary psychology, cave man y'know something something.

Can it be that rich and powerful women are able to dump under performing partners and replace them and that's breaking up some relationships?
No.

nettie434 · 11/04/2023 18:58

I hoped there would be a thread about this. I was much more positive about it, not because it was a good interview but because I thought that the number of times Evan D has been pulled up here for biased reporting had finally had an effect on the editorial team.

I saw it as a huge step forward - mainly because, as PotteringPondering suggested, Megan Phelps Roper showed how it is possible to have civilised and informed debates.

The Witch Trials series is definitely worth a listen - all sorts of interesting angles. It's about much more than the recent tribulations of JKR, although she gets to express herself as never before on this issue.

Totally missing the point:
I was driving when this was on so not paying that much attention but reading it has brought to mind exactly where on the road I was! (Bizarre)

Back to point :

Thought it was weird that they discounted women leaving. Was there any evidence for that?

I listen much less to PM now as Evan's obvious misogyny puts me off. He doesn't give a shit about women's safety or opinions it's really off-putting.

P.S. I have zilch interest in Potter but I love this news. JK is in control of her legacy. Marvellous woman.
