Tiffany Thomas won the cycling competition at the weekend at the age of 47.

Thomas's next oldest competitor was 32.

However, I do find Yahoo's headline very interesting. It is very explicit.

Male Athlete Wins Women’s Cycling Race in NYC

A transgender-identifying male secured first place at an amateur female cycling event in New York City.

However, I do find Yahoo's headline very interesting. It is very explicit.

Yahoo doesn't write its own copy - this is from the very right-wing National Review. Which normally I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole, and that in itself is immensely frustrating. I guess at least non-repulsive, mainstream publications are getting a bit more even-handed on these issues rather than just ra-ra stunning and brave.

Yet according to many of my acquaintances, trans women have no advantages. In fact, says one, a lady from California who used to be a competitive swimmer, it's just like the women over 6 ft she used to swim against, or the advantage Michael Phelps has in his physiology against other men. The support of the handmaidens for these men is astounding. Women's sport is dying.

The Michael Phelps argument always amuses me as he was still training full time and winning (in some cases) by fractions of a second.

I caught the end of Sharon Davis on times radio this morning. She was excellent, Chloe Tilly had lots of ‘hmm’ replies to her facts.

Where are all the transmen dominating the men's game? That's what I would like to know.

I'm sure the cyclepath is celebrating this win.

Possibly too busy reee-ing over the headline!

The article and its headline are syndicated content from National Review - a magazine which is produced for American conservatives.

And? Is there anything factually incorrect in the story of male athlete winning in women’s division?

If not (and I’ll give you a clue: there isn’t) then the question you should be asking is why is the left-leaning media closing its eyes and sticking its fingers in its ears rather than report on this?

There is nothing fundamentally right-wing about believing a) men can’t become women and b) women have rights to their own spaces and sports free from men.

I have to say, it is very difficult to link to 'approved left-wing media sources' when such sources don't report on certain news stories.

I find myself having to pick, e.g. Fox News over The Blaze for US-based stories because CNN or the Guardian pretend that certain things aren't happening.

A US relative of mine is not particularly left-wing but refuses to watch Fox News. I get it. I do. But she had never heard of Lia Thomas and was entirely unaware of the issue of mtf transitioners in women's sports. When I told her, she was uninterested and assumed it wasn't a big deal. As far as she's concerned, this stuff isn't happening.

Fair play to her, getting into elite sport starting in your early 40s is no mean feat, what with perimenopause etc starting to kick in.

My thoughts exactly. I'm a similar age and about retire from my competitive sport after 30 years. It's just too difficult to remain injury free and at the level of fitness and conditioning required to play even the low level I do. Being expected to go up against males in a contact sport was the final straw. I can just about hold my own against other women - even those 20 years my junior - but I'm not playing against males.
