Living in Australia, this is the first I have heard of her speech. Top story on ABC is about a politician making a comeback, then about flood insurance payouts.

I will say that The Australian is quite good at reporting this stuff. I never thought I'd say this about a Murdoch paper, but it seems to allow a range of views on a most topics which is quite refreshing. Otherwise I'm finding the media landscape in Australia disturbingly conformist. If they'll lie to us about something as basic as what a woman is, what else are they lying about?

Why Penny Wong? She’s currently the foreign minister.

I always thought Penny Wong would be one of those pollies supporting this fully. I mean, I have been out the country a few years, has she shown any sign that she would not back a male in women's prisons if that male said they were a woman?

Maybe others know more than me about her attitudes, but Penny is smart and a lesbian, who I thought would be a bit knowledgeable what the whole trans issue means for LGB peoples as well as women. And she is the leader of the senate, where this speech had to be given, so she can't ignore it.
