Adam Graham/Isla Bryson enrolled on a beauty course after being charged

I read this article www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-64419533
and the description from one of the students on the same course shows an interesting pattern of behaviour from the rapist. “Overpowering and disruptive” apparently. And none of the other students knew he’d been charged with rape yet the course meant some of the student were undressed for some elements such as spray tan.

There must have been alarms raised as the article says some students were repeatedly branded homophobic before the man charged with rape was asked to leave the course.

Have we literally got a case of mass psychosis from the people that are supposed to be in charge? What the fuck is wrong with them?

Rightsraptor · 27/01/2023 10:54

Has anyone worked out if Bryson was presenting male or female when he was doing the beauty course? Because I am struggling to understand the charges of 'homophobia' that were being lobbed at the participants of the course when they complained.

If he was female-presenting, then he'd be a 'lesbian' in his head - was that it? I think it must be. But what lesbian would behave inappropriately to other women on such a course? It's male behaviour.

If he was male presenting, he'd just be a straight bloke in with women.

If such colleges want to avoid problems like this, maybe they'll have to get all students to sign a declaration that they haven't been accused of/charged with any sexual offences. Then surely they could legitimately throw any such students out with the minimum of fuss.

Airshire College where Isla Bryson enrolled in a beauty course is working to achieve the LGBT charter mark devised by the Scottish Government:

..Sara Turkington, Equality and Diversity Lead, said: “The College has a long and successful record of supporting, advocating and championing LGBT+ rights and inclusion. The College’s participation in the Charter Mark has, however, re-focussed attention on what LGBT+ students and staff need and want from the College. I look forward to working with students and staff across the College and LGBT Youth Scotland to achieve the Charter Mark.

www.lgbtyouth.org.uk/the-lgbt-charter/the-lgbt-charter-for-organisations/

I wonder if this desire was in conflict with the need to remove Bryson after the other students complained?
The rights of one group of students should not be placed above the needs of another group.

FannyCann · 27/01/2023 12:08

I posted this on another thread but as this is specifically about the beauty course it's relevant here.

Wouldn't Yaniv love to enroll on a beauty course!

Obviously courses and colleges vary but as far as I know most beauticians seem to be young and female. I believe at some colleges it is possible for members of the public or other students to book treatments like facials or a massage at a cut price for the learners to train on.

So the opportunities for unwitting women to be exposed (literally) to this man - or any other trans women who sign up to such a course are plentiful.
I assume some students are male but that there would be provisions around that, and obviously in those cases their sex would be known and not an issue.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 27/01/2023 12:18

This makes me so angry.
These poor girls being treated as bigots for feeling uncomfortable. I hope the college is going to send them a full apology (of course it’s not).

Bergamotte · 27/01/2023 12:20

He was presenting as "Annie" on the course. The young women who felt uncomfortable with his aggressive male-pattern behaviour probably couldn't name the reason, due to the priority given to the "be kind and don't 'misgender' anyone" point of view.

It also sounds as though Bryson may have 'got in there first' saying that the fellow students were homophobic (so framing it that way):
"Rachel, a nail technician from Dundonald, South Ayrshire, said: “We started college when she was beginning her transition. It was a class full of young girls. She was refusing to do practical stuff at first because she said she didn’t feel comfortable.

“We had all kinds of accusations thrown at us in the middle of the classroom. I was being verbally attacked. She went to the head of the department and said we were all discriminating against her and were homophobic. I was really offended and hurt by that and didn’t go to college for three weeks because I was scared of the way she was coming at me.

"I didn’t even look at her because if I did, it gave her ammunition to say things to me. The way she spoke to the lecturers was disgusting. She made two of them cry. I found her very forceful and intimidating. Her true self came out during that time.”
Rachel said her experience of being required to remove her clothes in front of Bryson had left her “sickened”. She said: “Being a beauty course, you need to take your clothes off for some of it. We were doing spray tanning at one point and I was a model. You need to stand practically naked.""

I suppose they can't just tell all the fellow students that he had been charged with rape, as he hadn't yet been proven guilty. You can imagine the harm it would do to someone who had been wrongly accused. (I know false accusations of rape are vanishingly rare, but you have to have the rule.)

It does not seem very wise that he should have been allowed to attend this sort of course while awaiting trial.
Usually I am all for giving offenders the skills, self confidence, and outlook so that they will be less likely to re-offend. But this was completely inappropriate. After no time to reflect on his actions and show remorse, was put in a class full of young women, learning techniques that specifically involve looking at and touching their bodies.
Really not a good idea. Surely it would have been better to wait and do the course after being acquitted (in the case of someone innocent), or do a different sort of course, probably on-site at the (male) prison.

Yet another example of the extraordinary lengths predatory males will go to in order to gain access to potential victims.

This is a petition to update the Equality Act to make clear that the characteristic ‘sex’ is biological sex.

This is a parliamentary petition and your details would be kept private if you sign.

Surely those young female beauty students are the victims of some sort of harassment/intimidation offence?

And the college has some legal responsibility re: not putting their students into harms way like this?

Three months before they kicked him out - 3 months of disruption to potentially scores of students education, 3 months of being forced to associate daily with a man with 2 rape charges on his record! To undress in front of him!

I wonder how many women dropped out or failed to achieve their potential because of this absolutely shit of a man? How many are now dealing with poor mental health due to him? Staff too!

Those students should take some sort of legal action. I’d donate to a crowdfunder.

All our institutions need to be sued into oblivion until they stop prioritising men who claim to be women over actual women.

Hell yes, I would so donate to that. The college has failed in its duty of care towards them quite spectacularly.

ArabellaScott · 27/01/2023 13:10

I think the college had no idea he was awaiting trial.

MorvenOfMalvern · 27/01/2023 13:37

Interesting that NS is making the kinds of distinctions feminists have been making for YEARS. as Posie Parker has said many times, 'it's nothing to do with trans, it's to do with centring women and girls' rights" ish

“This individual case is not about whether they are trans or not, in this individual case this is a person who’s been convicted of rape, so this individual is a rapist and a sex offender and that is what’s important.”

MorvenOfMalvern · 27/01/2023 13:38

I think Sturgeon is beginning to find her GC words, bless her.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 27/01/2023 13:58

One of the students said: "Being a beauty course, you need to take your clothes off for some of it. We were doing spray tanning at one point and I was a model. You need to stand practically naked."

Leaving aside the wisdom of sending a man awaiting trial for rape on a beauty course, women being put in this position of being forced to be vulnerable around men is inevitable as long as there’s any pretence that some men are women

you like to be called Isla not Adam? Fine

you like to have long, painted nails? Crack on

you like to wear pink? Knock yourself out

but a man is a man. And as Sarah Phillimore said, when sex matters, it REALLY matters

repeal the GRA

it’s the only logical way forward

Charley50 · 27/01/2023 14:02

College's ask if you have a criminal record on enrolment but anyone can lie (he didn't have a record at that stage I guess). 14-18 year olds shouldn't be in classes with adult learners, that's safeguarding.

But basically sounds like his Trans special card meant he got away with abusing staff and students for 3 months too long. I agree that should consider taking the college to court.

LostMyUserName · 27/01/2023 15:11

I know enrolling on a college course is not as bad as as committing rape but there are so many situations where there are examples of Adam Graham displaying power and control.

I want people to notice there is a fucking pattern here!

I don’t know if he enrolled to get close to women or to whether it was part of his story to convince others he was transitioning but he is a liar.

OP posts:
Rightsraptor · 27/01/2023 15:32

If Graham/Bryson had a) been acquitted and b) qualified as a beauty therapist, I imagine he'd then have looked for work in that role. Working with women, many of women would be almost naked.

RoyalCorgi · 27/01/2023 15:34

I don’t know if he enrolled to get close to women or to whether it was part of his story to convince others he was transitioning but he is a liar.

I can take a guess at that one. I imagine the opportunity to see young women in a state of undress was a large part of the appeal.

Yet another example of the extraordinary lengths predatory males will go to in order to gain access to potential victims.

And the even more extraordinary lengths that some people/organisations will go to in order to facilitate them.

It's a national - no, an INTERNATIONAL- disgrace!

TheClogLady · 27/01/2023 15:51

I’ve been off doing stuff and thinking about this and I’m actually furious that these students were accused of homophobia when a) this man isn’t L or G (or B as far we know) and b) there is no way that a whole group of older teen/young adult beauty college students in 2021 are prejudiced against homosexual people!

These students will have been pursuing their interest in make up/hair/beauty by watching YouTube videos throughout their teen years and no doubt will list loads of gay male fashion/beauty professionals/journal editors amongst their inspirations! Beauty/make up artistry is one of the few creative industries where the vast, vast majority of the stars are women and gay men.

There may well have been gay male students in these classes, but as they are the same age as the female students and there for the exact same reason as the female students (learning skills for their future professional lives) they likely wouldn’t make the female students uncomfortable in the same way that ‘Isla’ the decade older ‘Lesbian’ did.

The students who instinctively didn’t like this rapist in a wig were reacting to their ‘Gift of Fear’.
Perhaps that’s hard to recognise and verbalise when you’re fresh out of high school or perhaps the current environment makes it impossible to speak up/be heard/get staff to react appropriately when the trans card is being played?

Which is exactly the sort of scenario we’ve been warning about for bloody ages - girls are having their perfectly ordinary, legitimate boundaries eroded via a steady diet of ‘Be Kind’ to the ‘Most Vulnerable’ and ‘TWAW’.

The messaging is starting so early (via kids telly and PSHE and the internet) that by the time they are brand new adults on
college course, they just self exclude, stay home and miss out.

I don’t know the area but I doubt there are many alternative l colleges to transfer to (offering similar courses) or that the public transport exists to make that a viable option?

I’m most angry for the women who were raped and this man’s soon to be ex wife (who has been unable to get an address for him to serve divorce papers for some years, according to another news story) and for the female prisoners who get locked in with these creeps all over the world and for the female staff in the police/justice system who no doubt have had to put up with his shitty behaviours but in some ways, I knew about all that already, and that anger is now more of an always burning ember than a hot flush of fire.

And I knew about teen girls having to deal with male school peers who claimed an inner female identity, which is bad enough…

… but somehow I hadn’t quite twigged that female teens of school leaving age were having to share college classrooms with decade older AGPs, let alone older AGPs charged with rape.

I doubt that those rape charges were his first brushes with the law either!

And I think I just found a whole new level of anger.

(I’ll happily donate to a crowdfunder for his exes divorce application too, now that she knows where he is!)

Article re: Shonna Graham’s experience of being in a relationship with this man, along with confirmation that he was known to the police as a domestic abuser, although this particular incident (of attempted rape and a knife injury to her thigh) wasn’t prosecuted.

www.scottishdailyexpress.co.uk/news/scottish-news/estranged-wife-transgender-rapist-says-29053843

Apologies for the trashy tabloid tone of the source but the serious papers don’t publish much on VAWG, especially not when the victims are ordinary working class women (and the perpetrators have a magical ID politics shield).

PaterPower · 27/01/2023 16:31

The only possible way you could get homophobia to stick is if the rapist thought he was a lesbian.

He’s no more a lesbian than he is a woman.

I’m just sorry to see, from the interviews in that article, how thoroughly gaslit the young women on his course were & are. Even after being revealed as a rapist, they’re calling him she/her.

The college owed them so much better. And the problem is that I suspect this case won’t make a jot of difference as to how they act in future under similar circumstances.

Absolutely! These organisations need to have to start explaining why some individuals are favoured over other individuals, how and why. If it is genuinely to remove discrimination, then there should be no problem. They know that it's discriminatory to biological women though so that's why it's all under cover. I think this is illegal discriminatory or neglectful behaviour by the college.
