Thank you BBC for getting an actual expert on this to speak about why a man is in a prison supposedly for women. Making it clear Scotgov ministers are responsible

OP posts:
daringdoris · 26/01/2023 13:32

She was really good.

Cailin66 · 26/01/2023 13:33

Who is she? Any link?

HighWindows1 · 26/01/2023 13:36

"Taking pride in displaying male genitalia"

"Never met a transwoman (in the prison system) who has undergone any physical changes"

Points out Strugeon saying this person won't be held in Cornton Vale but says she really needs to be pressed on the possibility that this person will be moved to womans wing in other prison.

Got a phone call so didn't catch if anyone else spoke on this item for balance but BBC did well in getting Rhona on!!

@Cailin66 - think she was a prison governor

daringdoris · 26/01/2023 13:51

HighWindows1 it was just her.

ILikeDungs · 26/01/2023 13:52

For Women Scotland introduced her as "Rhona Hotchkiss, LLM, BSc (Hons), spent her working life in the public sector, firstly as a critical care nurse and then manager and for the last 10 years as a Governor in the Prison Service. She retired in March 2019" in a 2020 youtube video

Teamsaction · 26/01/2023 13:53

Yes she was great although I wished the interviewer had asked her more questions on trans-identifed males already in women's prisons.

ChateauMargaux · 26/01/2023 13:55

Amazing. Thank you Rhona.

Shame that they had to find a retired person with nothing to loose to speak up for women but thank the lord they found a powerhouse with lots of relevant experience to do it.

nauticant · 26/01/2023 13:56

Rhona Hotchkiss also said that the prison governor would not have the power to segregate Bryson. For this there needs to be a prisoner actively threatening other prisoners. Bryson merely being a risk to women prisoners and being at large within the prison would not provide sufficient justification for segregation.

CriticalCondition · 26/01/2023 13:59

She is a director of Beira's Place. She's brilliant.

nauticant · 26/01/2023 14:00

There was some information on Woman's Hour this morning Teamsaction:

The BBC's Scottish correspondent said that there are 11 transwomen in the prison estate, 6 of whom are in the female estate. There are 4 transmen in the prison estate, 1 of whom is in the male estate.

If there are 300 women in the prison estate in Scotland, that's 2%.

ILikeDungs · 26/01/2023 14:01

Thank you Rhona. Strangely joyous to hear her call him "he".

Truth breaking out on the BBC?!

Do we know if that figure includes transwomen with a GRC?

Does anyone know if that's specifically all transwomen, or just those "living differently to their legal gender" (e.g. transwomen WITHOUT a GRC). I

"Strangely joyous to hear her call him "he"."

The Today programme this morning was interesting. The newsreader kept referring to she/Isla when reading headlines, and a few minutes later Nick would go in depth with he/Adam, "who now identifies as..." Good juxtaposition.

namitynamechange · 26/01/2023 14:05

@PaleBlueMoonlight cross post!

nauticant · 26/01/2023 14:10

Nobody knows @PaleBlueMoonlight and @namitynamechange

nauticant · 26/01/2023 14:12

Actually that post by me is unfair. It was completely unclear from the report on Radio 4. There might be useful information held somewhere.

Yes, I heard this. Thanks for posting the presenter's name as I missed that.

They played the quotation from his ex wife as well, at least twice. How Adam (sic) had shown no gender discomfort previously.

Wormwoodgal · 26/01/2023 14:26

The defendant told the court:
"I obviously want all the surgery the NHS can provide."
Given the long waiting lists, maybe someone should start a GoFundMe to help the poor creature? I'd contribute ...

GiantKitten · 26/01/2023 22:43

This is classic Rhona.
She is such a great ally!
