New definition of Homosexuality in the OED

The OED have updated their definition of Homosexuality.

The definitions of language we used to describe a Lesbian have now gone.

Children will be using this new definition in English classes in school.

This is a very simple example of homophobia.

Thanks.

Well, that's as clear as mud!

MsMarple · 19/01/2023 22:21

Well that’s worrying - as you say, it’s a popular schools version.

Boiledbeetle · 19/01/2023 22:23

That's appalling.

Here’s a photo of the 8th edition printed mini Oxford Dictionary

The full OED at www.oed.com (the print version was 20 volumes in 1989 - the online version is now much bigger) is updated less often (and possibly with more care) than the various other Oxford dictionaries and abridgements. Nevertheless, it's easy to see the direction of travel and the potential for the full OED to receive a similar update in due course. And the smaller Oxford dictionaries have a much wider audience (but incidentally, anyone can log into oed.com and view the full version if you have a UK library card number).

They must have institutionally captured people running the on-line mini versions then.

The linked many volumed one kept at libraries is supposed to be the absolute canon though.

People should write in to:

The dictionary.

The Gay Men’s Network. They responded to a consultation with the CPS over Sex by deception, related to undisclosed trans identities, with a long document.

The LGB Alliance.

These last two would have people capable of complaining in the manner that might be listened to.

The OED records how people use the langauge, not how they should use it. It's not prescriptive. There is no point in writing in to complain.

Hardly. All this will be reversed in a while. It’s a fad, nothing more.

Exactly, and that’s not how people are using the language in the UK. I know loads and loads of people and they’re absolutely not homophobic, audibly so.

Where are all these homophobic people using language in this way? Why is no one pulling them up for their homophobia?
