Do they really think that they will increase nationalist sentiment with this Men's Rights Activism?
So fed up of these opportunistic tossers. It'll come back to bite them on the arse. In a democracy, to make a radical idea become mainstream, you need the middle ground. Opening the door of women's prisons to male rapists (not hate speech- see the census #1In585) isn't going to win the middle ground.
In a cult, on the other hand, scaring people into silence is par for the course.

The thing is sadly Drakeford is not wrong politically in this at least in short term. There will be no political fallout from this because ONLY the welsh Tories and esp Laura are seen to be resisting in the Senedd. Welsh Lab and Plaid elite are united in this. Welsh Tories are MORE unpopular than ever right now. Drakeford can do what he wants go to Qatar to give cover to a homophobic government with no blowback.

The situation in Wales is screwed. The only thing that saves us is Senedd has less power than Scotland. Education is broken now.

We have great groups in Wales organising resistance and the general public is with us BUT we are way behind. We are worse off than Scotland where they have a far bigger set of people resisting, they have a bunch of resisters in their Parliament cross party, and a separate Scottish media which sometimes prints Gender Crit views.

Beyond Tonia Antoniazzi MP in Gower we are lacking in prominent voices not on the right.

Meanwhile in Wales a unisex toilet has resulted in a women being raped and the problem is being ignored.

Ok so I have already emailed my conservative mp a few days ago asking him to support westminster blocking the scottish bill (my mp replied and agreed it was an issue)

But I am now going to write to the Plaid candidate and explain why this is a terrible thjnk for Drakeford to suggest.

Suggestions for content?

That nightclub attack is horrific. Why isn't this kind of thing making bigger headlines?? The woman went into mixed sex toilets, accompanied by her boyfriend but his presence wasn't enough to prevent an attack by this vile man.

mejon · 11/01/2023 12:59

Both Labour and Plaid had commitment to Self-ID in their last manifestoes - Tories will never win here so regardless of how the next election goes, looks like we're stuffed. As OP says, Laura Jones is the only one raising these issues and is constantly derided by Drakeford for having the temerity to suggest that there might be an issue.

I've now been asked by a third person whether I know anything about Mark Drakeford's son Jonathan, who was sentenced to nine years for rape in 2018. There's a rumour going round that possibly he's transitioned while in prison. No evidence to support it as far as I know. The people asking me are Labour supporters who've known Drakeford for years and thought he was the kind of person who would respond to rational argument. On this subject he seems completely close-minded and unreasonable and people are trying to work out what's motivating him:

Certainly mention the toilet attack in Cardiff. Also reference Welsh Rugby and Sports Wales recognition that Sex exists in Sport and fairness physical safety is paramount. Take a look at Merched Cymru for lots of background:
merchedcymru.wales/

Also mention the fact that sexual harassment is rife in Welsh Schools:
www.walesonline.co.uk/news/education/sex-abuse-schools-everyones-invited-20794373

With Tate so popular why are they denying the existence of sexism? The only way to counter this is through positive messaging about how the sexes can live and love together. Gender ideology wrecks any chance of that.

Seems the type. Or it maybe someone else in Drakeford's family or friends has transed. Lots of people have become fanatics that way.

bellinisurge · 11/01/2023 14:46

If he is so compromised on his judgment, he shouldn't be doing the job. How can he read this thread by Henrietta Freeman and dismiss arguments about the need to protect single sex spaces. Where sex means biological sex.

As far as I can see his tactic is not to touch, read, look at or discuss the subject with anyone who isn't completely on board the gender ideology express. There are some important women's groups in Wales — Merched Cymru is one — that Drakeford has for years now refused to meet. The only people he speaks to on this subject seem to be Stonewall Cymru, the crackpot Pride organiser who is incredibly abusive to people on Twitter, and Queer (and very dodgy) academics like EJ Renold of Cardiff University, where he was a Professor of Social Policy. Presumably while there he soaked up Queer Theory.

pattihews · 11/01/2023 15:36

I've just checked one of my WA groups and there is speculation rife that under those baggy suits Mr Drakeford is wearing a suspender belt and stockings...

If you're reading this, First Minister, this is where your refusal to have a polite, rational discussion with informed women gets you. You've run and fudged and blocked for years now. I think it was last year you promised in front of an audience that you or one of your ministers would hold a meeting to discuss concerns. I know that some of those women have tried several times to set the meeting up and been rebuffed.

When you behave like this you're going to be the butt of jokes. This is not behaviour consistent with a democracy.

EnfysPreseli · 11/01/2023 16:24

This statement is consistent with what we knew from the Welsh Labour and Plaid Cymru manifestos at the last Senedd elections and also the Cooperation agreement between Labour and Plaid. The surprising thing about it is that it seems that Drakeford is so blissfully aware of the controversy or concerns. He has such a naive and simplistic understanding of what the issues are. He's decided that by virtue of their status as a minority - a very small one indeed in Wales according to the Census stats, virtually nobody outside university towns - trans people should get exactly what they want without anyone looking at the evidence or considering unforeseen consequences or even doing and Equality Impact Assessment. Any questioning or scrutiny is deemed transphobic. It's so stupid, let alone anti-democratic.

Ironically, I think a Plaid politician who was bullied for allegedly being a transphobe (she isn't) is probably responsible for making Drakeford convinced that self-ID is the only way ahead. He was apparently very moved by a meeting with a group of very troubled young people from a youth organisation she was Chair of who told him how much happier it makes them to have their social identities recognised (which isn't surprising but not a reason to change the law and tear up birth certificates). He seems to have been more swayed by that one meeting and special pleading from the Cardiff-centric equality clique than any evidence from elsewhere. The views and experience of women and girls are particularly low on the list but older people, disabled people and people of faith don't fare much better.

I thought evidence-based policy making was meant to ensure that we didn't end up with laws, funding and policy that swung from one extreme to the next depending on who cried most or shouted loudest at the politicians. Welsh Government has totally lost the plot. Drakeford didn't seem to have any awareness of the cross-border or constitutional issues let alone the intervention of Reem Alsalem the UN Special Rapporteur. What an idiot to make that commitment before knowing how issues around the Scottish GRR Bill play out in the courts or with UK government. He must be getting really poor advice.

fromorbit · 11/01/2023 16:51

Drakeford is fully on board trans train for sure. However he is standing down by the end of 2024 apparently. Which means a leadership contest inside Welsh Labour.

Which gives Gender crits a chance inside Welsh Labour a chance to raise debate again. Unlikely to be able to get our own candidate to stand you need 20% of the Labour Senedd members to get nominated. Not one Welsh Lab MS will stand for women as far as we know. Vaughan Gething is likely front runner and he has said nothing useful seems captured as well.

However there will be a bunch of debates and a chance to ask stuff like what is a woman? Are homosexuals real? Unisex toilets where women are raped good or bad?

The more drama caused the bigger the profile of the issue raised in preparation for General election.

BlessedKali · 11/01/2023 23:14

Fingers crossed Westminster steps in and blocks Scottish Bill, categorically stating the dangers... Then Drakeford won't be able to bring it in (surely?)

EnfysPreseli · 12/01/2023 09:48

Let's hope so. I don't know how they undo this mess in the long term. If only there had never been a pretence that people could actually change sex. A much more rational system would be for sex to remain unchanged o birth certificates (with the exception of the extremely rare cases where sex was wrongly assumed at birth) and some sort of acknowledgement of a different social identity. There would still need to be some sort of process involved in that too, though I can't understand what business it is of the state in most cases.

A birth cert that looks different to those given out at birth might be workable. Like an adoption cert, so those who see it are aware that its not an original birth certificate.
