I've been watching "His Dark Materials" and listening to "The Dark is Rising", and this came to me. It may need more work. But is so easy to spot the Dark in fantasy, and wonder why anyone would support it. When it is rising al around us.

When the Dark comes rising it will not come
Riding on a black horse out of the blizzards of Fimbulwinter
Surrounded by swirling clouds of rooks cawing wildly
By ravens watching and feeding back to the Morrigan
By an authority ruling through hard men
Stealing souls of children by cutting machines
And casting out truth with cries of heresy
It will not be defeated by a very few children
Suddenly possessed of ancient powers.
When the Dark comes rising it will wear bright colours
And frills and petticoats, looking from dark lashes
And simpering sweetly, "Be kind, be kind,"
We are weak, and despised, treated badly, "Be kind,"
And it will seduce the children into rejecting truth
Into laying aside their powers of thought and sense
And giving up willingly their bodies to the knives
And it will persuade the adults to fear a word
A word without meaning, and see the truth as hate
It will not take one gifted child to light the dark
It will take all of us, all who see the light

And know the dark for what it is

Bloody hell, @Treaclemine wow!

Send this to everybody. It happened on the shortest day, we're now tilting towards light. I hope that it will be figuratively, as well as literally.

DameMaud · 22/12/2022 15:13

@Treaclemine this is amazing!!!! This needs to be out there. I'm blown away. Don't let it just sit here!

Justsurfing · 22/12/2022 15:51

wow..... love this! 😍

Treaclemine · 22/12/2022 15:56

Since I'm not on Facebook or Twitter I'm a bit limited in where to post it! And one of the other places I have posted would have me out tarred and feathered. Haven't been there much since I got picked up for posting something someone complained about being a bit terfy. Other place has the first person who brought up the issue and got me here. She had a women's group closed on her and her friends for discussing things like fistulas which were suddenly exclusionary, so politically good, but I haven't seen any verse there.
I hadn't noticed the date connection - though the Susan Cooper broadcast which started it is deliberately linked.

So powerful.

Thank you.

Ofcourseshecan · 22/12/2022 16:02

Superb. Send it The Radical Notion? Or can anyone think of other genuinely feminist magazines?

Cherryblossoms85 · 22/12/2022 16:05

Yup. My very lovely leftie friends can't see it at all though.

Rainbowshit · 22/12/2022 16:09

Just so true.

DameMaud · 22/12/2022 16:15

Send it to KJK? Or someone on here who has Twitter could put it out? Send it to Rachel Rooney? It's too good to waste unseen. Thread here are so short-lived.

DameMaud · 22/12/2022 16:15

Send it to JKR!

Baldieheid · 22/12/2022 16:17

DameMaud · 22/12/2022 16:15

Send it to JKR!

Seconded. She'd respect your anonymity whilst reaching millions.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/12/2022 16:18

Yes, send it to JKR. Fantastic.

Baldieheid · 22/12/2022 16:18

Or Posie. KJK would grab that, too. Smaller reach but boy, is she gobby. And back on twitter.

IcakethereforeIam · 22/12/2022 16:27

@Glinner have you seen this?

Treaclemine · 22/12/2022 16:30

Anybody who wants to circulate this is welcome to do so. Waves hands waiving copyright.

It is so beautiful on an ugly topic. We could all disseminate it?

BookWorm45 · 22/12/2022 18:07

Thank you @Treaclemine that is excellent.

Magenta82 · 22/12/2022 18:15

It is fabulous!
I've tweeted, I hope you don't mind!

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 22/12/2022 18:43

Sublime writing.

I'm watching 'His Dark Materials' too, and the same thought occurred to me in relation to the practice of intercision. It was represented as the worst kind of cruelty imaginable, and the parallels between this and the more recent concept of an irreversible medical pathway are too striking to be missed.

Which is why it's all the more unfathomable that Pullman has come out in vocal support of this insidious, cruel ideology. Surely he, of all people, can see it?

nocoolnamesleft · 22/12/2022 21:03

That is beautiful. But I think Susan Cooper is still alive, and does not appear to have entered this debate. I'm not sure that it is fair to risk dragging her into it.

BenCoopersSupportWren · 23/12/2022 09:08

I am a huge Susan Cooper / TDIR fan, currently re-reading as I do every midwinter, and this is so beautiful and so bittersweet.

I’ve tweeted it, crediting your pseudonym and tagging a few prominent feminist tweeters in the hope they might retweet it.

AGirlHasABloodyName · 23/12/2022 18:19

V nice, but parts are also v close to the original rhyme in the books. Might want to make sure Cooper is credited fairly as inspo when disseminating & that it's not attributed to her. She has ties to Hollywood so it could blow up for her.

Giggorata · 23/12/2022 18:29

Wonderful stuff, Treaclemine.
