Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Shelagh Fogarty being brilliant on LBC

Quick tune in! Asked TW how they ‘knew they were a woman’. TW replies they played with dolls as a child. She just says ‘that doesn’t make you a woman.’ TW stumped and says their ‘brain cells told them they were a woman’

Finally someone challenging the wanky sexist concept of ‘gender’!

TW also said they felt more like a girl because they liked the "finer things in life" Confused

Lottapianos · 22/12/2022 14:09

Heard the second half of that hour. It's the first time I've heard a journalist conduct a discussion about trans issues LIKE AN ACTUAL JOURNALIST. Asking questions, asking for clarification, challenging politely, countering the arguments. Challenging the endless sexist stereotypes. She was polite and courteous as she always is but there was no fawning. Also put her foot down when a caller tried to dismiss the controversy about Mermaids. Bloody good for her. More of this please

I found the transwomen who phoned in just really sad. Somewhere in their early years, they got the message that they were not 'proper' boys, and have been carrying that all their lives. Dreadful

Probably expecting the usual pandering and clucking.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 22/12/2022 16:26

Shelagh was most excellent. She actually said the words ‘you cannot change your biological sex’ and ‘if you died and they dug up your skeleton, it would be the sex you were at birth’. How mad that this is brave journalism.

She was brilliantly respectful, thoughtful but had no truck with the Mermaids bullshit and actually made that caller think again about the possibility of changing sex / what it means to ‘live like a woman’.

Keep it up Shelagh.

cosmiccosmos · 22/12/2022 17:03

I heard most of this and she was very good, very refreshing to hear. Did they have any GC women on though? The only callers I heard were the trans identifying man who always rings in on the trans pieces and is now evidently the proud owner of a 'vagina', the guy who worked in mental health and the girl who was in a relationship with a trans person and who had swallowed the Mermaids handbook. I can't believe no GC women called in and put the facts forward?

Tom Swarbrick is on now, he gives this topic lots of coverage too.

Skyellaskerry · 22/12/2022 17:35

I missed it today but I listen to Shelagh a lot, I think she’s brilliant. Will listen to it later.

Yippitydoodah · 22/12/2022 17:37

There was GC men phoning in! I mean it’s probably sad I feel this way but I was quite amazed it seems to have broken into mainstream male thought. Ok Scotland’s gone up the shitter today, but it looks like England is smelling the coffee just in time.

Can we listen anywhere?

Spot on Yippity - I've noticed that the comments in the Times under the Scottish debacle articles (and all the others about the sex offenders / cancelled women etc) are full of men - all getting the issue and outraged.

You can listen back on the LBC app.

Love Shelagh.

glamourousindierockandroll · 22/12/2022 17:42

As in 'I love Shelagh' not 'Love, Shelagh'. Sadly I am not she. Grin

knittingaddict · 22/12/2022 17:46

My husband gets it too.

They fucking know how men think that’s why. They know. And they know their wives/daughters/sisters/mothers are at risk.

Fenlandia · 22/12/2022 17:54

One of many pennies that dropped for me on my way up to the er, apex, was how profoundly sexist it is that a man who doesn't fit norms of masculinity, dress, interests, whatever, is regarded as not any kind of man and is actually a woman. Once you strip that back to the basics, you are left with this wibble about 'brain cells' as in the OP's quote.

I must look up the segment on the app, Shelagh has been quietly replying to GC tweets for a while.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 22/12/2022 18:06

Shelagh is ace. So is James OB (swoon).

Actually enjoy Nick Ferrari too. Totally different politics to me but usually pretty measured and shuts down the more rabid callers.

Apologies for sidebar - it’s bloody great that a mainstream, national broadcaster is openly stating what a woman isn’t.

theculture · 22/12/2022 18:08

Why is this another issue, like Brexit, that is only properly being discussed after the event rather than emotionally charged statements with no backing evidence

wesayno · 22/12/2022 18:08

Soft voice JOB who's sided with TRAs time and time again? 🤔

horrificbiology · 22/12/2022 18:13

I listened today and yes her and Tom do treat this subject with respect and are not argumentative with the callers which is refreshing. It can quickly turn horrible by both sides so it is nice to hear. I actually felt very sad for the last caller as it sounded like they hadn't found a place they belonged yet.

glamourousindierockandroll · 22/12/2022 18:15

@YellowAndGreenToBeSeen has JOB shifted on this issue?

I have to say that listening to his cognitive dissonance a couple of years ago talking sensitively about the MeToo movement one day, and then "not getting it" about men in women's spaces the next was rage inducing. He couldn't (or wouldn't) consider how predatory men would use this, and stuck to the old line of 'so you think all transwomen are rapists?'.

Skyellaskerry · 22/12/2022 18:21

I’m curious to hear if and how Rachel Johnson or Sangita Myska cover it too.

They were clearly troubled but it’s frustrating that they assume that it’s up to women to accommodate them and #bekind rather than working through their own issues.

lifeinthelastlane · 22/12/2022 18:37

@MrsOvertonsWindow there will always be more men posting on the Times now; since they've decided we have to use real names. Many women will have stopped commenting or cancelled their subscription.

Justme56 · 22/12/2022 19:18

Just listened. Couldn’t understand what the first TW was on about - some sort of theory that the legislation was a conspiracy to prevent them getting hormones. Also surgery in your 70s to remove your bits - would you bother at that age? As for the last TW they sounded like they desperately needed some mental health support. I do think some of these people believe that identifying as the opposite sex is the answer to all their issues. Unfortunately I can only imagine that this will further compound rather than resolve them. Good conversation though.

Yes, if you get the Global Player app go to live radio / schedule & catch up / and you should be able to select past shows

Lottapianos · 22/12/2022 20:42

'I’m curious to hear if and how Rachel Johnson or Sangita Myska cover it too.'

Rachel is definitely gender critical. I have hope that Sangita is the same but can't say for sure
