Kemi Badenoch MP answering questions on conversion therapy today

KB dealing with the tiresome invective of the opposition benches. Why on earth won't the government stop carefully considering the public consultation, and just push though a potentially harmful piece of legislation that will bar talking therapy for those who want/need it? What about transpeople wah! Of course they don't really care about the LGB.

It's so frustrating when they talk such bollocks.

They need to define trans before they ask whether or not conversion therapy is abhorrent. If someone has crippling gender dysphoria and talking therapy can ease it, if not resolve it entirely, are they calling that abhorrent?

Likewise, if someone is not suffering from gender dysphoria, but likes to cross dress for erotic purposes, and gets excited when they are called a woman, is not calling them a woman now 'abhorrent'?

i've never seen quite so many people, who I imagine are perfectly normal, rational individuals, mot transactivists, who are blindly accepting that a transgender identity is something other than what it is.

Let them come up with a bloody definition, before they start attaching judgements to it.

The mention of 11% of trans people being subjected to conversion therapy by their own families. I wonder if this just refers to parents who don't go along with the idea that their child is non-binary or the opposite sex?

TheBiologyStupid · 30/11/2022 22:24

If you're right, that's a worryingly low number of parents not going along with the nonsense, Signalbox.

Whereareyourshoes · 01/12/2022 07:05

Clarity from Kemi, “The honourable lady from the SNP is of course talking absolute nonsense…
this is about looking after vulnerable people, not about social media campaigning.’

OmiOmy · 01/12/2022 08:40

Does anyone know where the 11% stat coming from? Which study? And the attempted suicide rate?

LangClegsInSpace · 01/12/2022 22:01

Wow. No wonder they hung onto #NoDebate as long as they could.

KB strikes me as someone with a deep understanding of identity politics, who genuinely wants to get this right. I can't think of a safer pair of hands for this conversion therapy clusterfuck.

It seems very likely, poor Kemi, I feel for her. It reminds of having my children all clamouring for something when they don’t understand what they’re asking for and why they can’t have it.

How disappointing that there are so many MPs who haven’t understood the issues but are continuing to agitate for banning “trans conversion” which doesn’t even make sense as a coherent concept and would prevent people accessing talking therapy prior to undertaking serious unnecessary medical and surgical interventions which carry long term negative consequences.

and would prevent people accessing talking therapy prior to undertaking serious unnecessary medical and surgical interventions which carry long term negative consequences.

But also the potential criminalisation of parents who don’t affirm or won’t consent to “treatment”. It’s already hard enough for parents to navigate having a child that declares themselves to be “trans”. Imagine if you now had the prospect of being charged with conversion therapy against your own child.

Yes indeed, the thought is terrifying! Sometimes it does really seem that there is a conspiracy going on to separate parents and children, to undermine parents, to strip parents and children of their rights, to remove stability and security from children and in fact to destroy the family.

It would be appalling. It's hard enough to negotiate this issue with the establishment against you. Children being trans would be fine if all it meant was wearing trousers and being grumpy. It becomes dangerous when medics suggest sterilisation as a serious solution. Criminalising safe parents would add another dimension of horror to this nightmare

Yes, i'd love to have seen her add to her 'don't be ridiculous' with, 'we can't just affirm children on a path of total sterilisation, without good cause, you know'.

Now that would have been great Grin
