Cambridge sermon: Jesus may have been trans

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/11/26/jesus-could-have-transgender-claims-cambridge-dean/

Jushua Heath, a junior research fellow, guest preacher at evensong at Trinity College chapel displayed Renaissance and Medieval paintings of the crucifixion, which depicted a side wound he likened to a vagina, and said Christ had a trans body.

Dr Michael Banner, dean of Trinity College said such a view was "legitimate" in a response to one anonymous worshipper who said the audience and choir were "visibly uncomfortable" and upset at the sermon. Dr Banner said the sermon "suggested that we might think about these images of Christ's male/female body as providing us with ways of thinking about issues around transgender questions today".

He added: "For myself, I think that speculation was legitimate, whether or not you or I or anyone else disagrees with the interpretation, says something else about that artistic tradition, or resists its application to contemporary questions around transsexualism."

I'm not even religious, but I seriously wonder if there is anywhere the trans movement won't go in support of their ideology.

I'm fairly certain that no man in their right mind would identify as female in Palestine in AD33.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 27/11/2022 13:06

The capacity of some men to sexualise everything knows no bounds. The sad thing is when useful idiots like the dean of trinity lack the integrity to challenge it "cos it's trans".

puffyisgood · 27/11/2022 13:06

probably, in fairness, more believable than turning water into wine.

I can't really get too upset about claims made regarding a space pixie's 'gender identity', provided of course that it's not somehow used as an excuse to pass TWAW-style lies as, er, gospel.

Thethingswedoforlove · 27/11/2022 13:06

I don’t think one bonkers Dean is representative of the whole Church of England!

kingtamponthefurred · 27/11/2022 13:10

It's no more inherently improbable than virgin birth.

As a Muslim, I have issues with such statements too.

How can people get away with saying such garbage? I remember there was outrage when a comedian made jokes that Jesus (peace be upon him) was gay. And then some were going around wearing t shirts saying that.

It’s upsetting and offensive. And now they’re saying something like this?!

Trans people can live how they want, but don’t bring Religion and all that is holy into it.

Somanysocks · 27/11/2022 13:12

As a Christian (not c of e) I find that totally offensive.

WomenShouldWinWomensSports · 27/11/2022 13:13

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow 🤣🤣🤣

I'm agnostic and so do I.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 27/11/2022 13:16

I want to say something wise but all I can come up with is FFS. I'd have gathered up my family and walked out.

ZandathePanda · 27/11/2022 13:19

Ideological spaghetti mash-up

ControversialOpening · 27/11/2022 13:20

I don't find it offensive, but I do find it fucking ridiculous.

RagzRebooted · 27/11/2022 12:43

Um, what? Seriously... WTAF?

Well, Jesus could do no wrong, and his acolytes believed he could walk on water so probably a TW...

Somanysocks · 27/11/2022 13:22

I wish trans would just go and eat itself.

Dontaskdontget · 27/11/2022 13:24

The listeners should have got up and walked out. I would have.

Absolutely fed up of freaky men comparing a vagina to a wound, it’s so insulting.

I think that’s what they want to do 🤣

PiggyInTheLidl · 27/11/2022 13:25

I would have thought the long hair and maxi dress he often wore were more conclusive?

FFS.

So much to unpick in this. The construct of female genitals as a wound. The superimposition of C12th Italian sensibility on Middle Eastern culture a millennium earlier, potential for (interesting, IMO) metaphorical expression of Christ’s body to represent all humankind, etc.

dropthevipers · 27/11/2022 13:27

Always a fine line to walk between fashionably edgy and complete twat.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 27/11/2022 13:27

I wonder if a preacher has got up and said “you can’t change sex, TWATW not women” whether Dr Banner would be so quick to jump up & defend them

WomenShouldWinWomensSports · 27/11/2022 12:46

Jesus Christ. I was wondering if C of E aligned with my beliefs better than Catholicism, which I have other issues with, but that’s got to be a sign from God that the Church of England is a fucking joke.

😂😂😂 I am C of E and this made me laugh. I am horrified at the sermon but trying not to give it headspace because
it’s just so bloody attention seeking.

This!!
I am a C of E priest (female) and I also would have left that sermon horrified.
I will have to reflect on why, but I find the concept of his sermon deeply upsetting.

EsmaCannonball · 27/11/2022 13:28

Lovely hair, obviously shops somewhere like Monsoon or East, the Fit-Flops, spends a lot of time visiting the sick and helping out with the food and drink at big events, clearly can't walk past a lamb without giving it a cuddle. I think we're going to have to accept he was at least questioning.

And this right here is why MN needs a like button.
