Scottish GRR bill & sex offenders

Just highlighting that Shona Robison today refused to uphold amendments to the GRR bill that were aimed at preventing sex offenders abusing the new law.

Instead, sex offenders will be required to alert police if they make a GRC application.

So that's great.

Women's safety is placed in the hands of sex offenders.

'The Conservatives' Russell Findlay also put forward a number of amendments which sought to prevent registered sex offenders from acquiring a gender recognition certificate.

He said the bill as it stands would allow male sex offenders to change their identities, adding that "prisons are full" of men who seek to exploit loopholes in the law.
...
Ms Robison said she could not back Mr Findlay's amendment, but said the Scottish government was bringing in other changes.

One of these was a new requirement under the sex offenders notification scheme for offenders to alert police if they made an application for a gender recognition certificate.'

Terrifying. Prioritising the wishes of their trans friends over the safety of women and children in Scotland.

Soontobe60 · 15/11/2022 15:18

Good grief!!! Because we all know that sex offenders will be so open and honest in order to ensure they are kept away from any possible victims of their crimes.

This is a crime, or multiple crimes, waiting to happen. NS will have blood on her hands.

To actually vote against this amendment is astonishing. I sincerely hope that each and every one of them might be deselected in any forthcoming election. They do not deserve the responsibility they have.

Ramblingnamechanger · 15/11/2022 16:50

Russell Findlay did his best to stop the worst, and the other parties still wondering why women are leaving…

Link to the article from that thread, regarding self ID in Ireland (where Robison said there have been 'no problems'):

www.lawsociety.ie/gazette/top-stories/2019/10-october/male-bodied-transgender-inmate-housed-with-women-prisoners

'Criminal defence lawyer Robert Purcell says that the Gender Recognition Act 2015 has placed the State in an impossible position with regard to transgender prisoners.

The law is challenging for the courts and the Irish Prison Service, he believes, since there is, potentially, a safety issue for women inmates housed alongside a male-bodied prisoner.

Currently, a pre-operative, pre-hormone therapy, male-to-female transgender prisoner is being held in Limerick women’s prison.

This is understood to be the first time that an inmate, registered as male at birth, has been housed in a women’s prison in Ireland.
...

It is understood that the prisoner was assigned a high level of monitoring after being convicted of ten counts of sexual assault and one count of cruelty against a child.

The prisoner is accompanied by two officers at all times while in the common areas of the detention facility.

...

Robert Purcell is chair of the Law Society Criminal Law Committee: “The law that was enacted in 2015 did not envisage this situation, and it puts the Prison Service and the courts in a difficult position because, obviously, if somebody is self-declaring that they have to be recognised, then they have to be dealt with on that basis, even though physically, they have not have made the [physical] transformation.

“I don’t think the legislation envisaged the ability of transgender people to be able to self-declare; and it didn’t foresee the problems it would cause if a transgender, self-declared person was held in a mixed prison,” he said.''

Wow, what a piece of work she is.

Come the next election there needs to be a poster on every lamp post in Scotland telling voters that she voted against protecting women and children from sex offenders. And that they’re voting for more of the same if they vote for the SNP.

PronounssheRa · 15/11/2022 17:46

'Welcome to Scotland, where we prioritise the feelings of sex offenders over the safety of women and children'

Scotland is going to become a safe haven for sex offenders who want to obscure or hide their offending history.

Altoo · 15/11/2022 17:49

This is beyond awful. I can't say anything else that won't get me arrested

ArabellaScott · 15/11/2022 18:30

www.scottishdailyexpress.co.uk/news/politics/snp-scottish-greens-vote-against-28496491

'"As it stands, the bill would allow a registered sex offender to change gender and thereby acquire a new birth certificate which would hide their true identity.

"This would make it incredibly easy for predators to erase their pasts. Society would be prohibited from any way of knowing if a legally defined female was actually a male sex offender.'

"Prisons are full of men who exploit whatever mechanism or loopholes available to gain access to women and girls and to commit sex offenders.

"The GRR bill will be a gift to such predators, it would increase public risk, that risk predominantly being towards women."'

Shona, tell us you hate women without telling us you hate women.

Believerinbiology · 15/11/2022 19:24

In relation to Ireland, as far as we know, there are now 3 males housed in the female estate in Limerick Prison. That may seem a small number but there are only 28 spaces in the female estate. One of the 3 is the person referred to above, the second is BK who violently assaulted a social worker who was driving and is now awaiting sentencing for threats of rape and torture. gript.ie/the-editors-barbie-kardashian-case-exposes-absurdity-of-the-gender-recognition-act/
Cannot find any media coverage of the third.
While kept separate now from women they are still causing harm to women in prison...listen to report from a former prisoner at the start of this recent podcast from Paddy O'Gorman www.buzzsprout.com/2008450?client_source=large_player&iframe=true&referrer=www.buzzsprout.com/2008450.js?container_id=buzzsprout-large-player&player=large#
