Advert on Facebook for the above.
Says they have been empowering women for x number of years.
Lots of pics of women in their bra and pants, holding feather boas, rolling on satin sheets etc.

Looks very much like it's women appealing to the male gaze. How is that empowering?

Anyway have asked them men gain confidence in the same way....i wonder whT the answer is? 🤔

I pulled them up on that a few years ago, if it’s the same one.

Unseelie · 06/11/2022 18:03

Ugh yuk it’s always the same. In the 1990s it was the Spice Girls empowering ten year olds to wear skirts that showed their knickers. Funny how empowering women always means empowering them to turn on men.

Sigh.

Well, unless they are much better with Photoshop than most people, that is never going to work.

Well tailored & fitting clothes that cover all the worst bits boost my confidence massively.

Me in my undies, with or without a feather boa, not so much.

Funny how empowering women always means empowering them to turn on men

weird isn’t it

favourite line from a film was something like ‘men won when they convinced women pole dancing was exercise’

men are empowered by being CEO, women are empowered by taking their clothes off…apparently

I'm no prude but it seems popstars/groups basically perform like strippers when they are on stage now, even if they are really good singers/performers. I think of Little Mix who if you didn't know who they were would like a strip act in a dodgy club.

Watching TOTP2 alot of the acts back in the late 80s early 90s were turning the tide for women in their power suits etc. Even Mariah Carey managed to start the decade looking classy and ended it looking like hooker!

I think a friend has been there. Her photos are really lovely. She was dreading it (was a gift or a raffle win, iirc).

Her photos are from angles and in poses that flatter her.
She's wearing a white shirt with the collar up in one, I think. They just carefully avoid any double chins, and are quite dramatically lit which I suppose diminishes some problems.

They are tasteful, and not particularly male gaze, I don't think.
Some women will want that look, and will have posed in that way.

I mean, there's always the issue of why what we look like matters, but that aside her photo were really well done. I'd like a photo of me looking good, frankly.

Empowerment for men = actually having power.

Empowerment for women = taking off our clothes, and enacting the very scenarios that oppress us.

No thank you.

‘men won when they convinced women pole dancing was exercise’

I get the sentiment but I’m torn on that specific example, because I always think pole dancing looks ridiculously fun. I’ve never actually tried it because it’s got such tryhard connotations 😬, and realistically you probably need to be stronger and more co-ordinated than I am, but I’d love to be able to do that stuff!

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 06/11/2022 19:52

I know what you mean tasteful 😀

Skelligsfeathers · 07/11/2022 13:06

I've had a notification that they have mentioned me in a comment but they have obviously blocked me so i can't see it! Hopefully I'll stop seeing the adverts now.

@TastefulRainbowUnicorn you need to try pole fitness, it's amazingly fun. If you find the right club as well they are really good at tailoring to your abilities, have poled with people with birth injuries, disability etc over the years.

It's also almost all female by default, have had a few guys join over the years, but no one who demands special treatment or thinks it makes them a girl.
