Petition re Equality Act

In case this hasn't been seen or shared.
Petition emailed to me today by SexMatters signed by Mata Forstater

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/623243?mc_cid=2374ed1657&mc_eid=f9d32af33e

Email reads:
We are calling on the UK government to update the Equality Act 2010 to make it clear that the protected characteristic of “sex” means biological sex and nothing else.

I have started a petition, and we need 10,000 people to sign this week, and 100,000 by the end of the year.

Make the Equality Act clear: sign the petition
There is an opportunity to lock in legal clarity now. In May the government made a statement to the houses of Parliament recognising the need for new laws to be clear about the meaning of “sex”. Last week Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he intends to “look to review the Equality Act to make it clear that sex means biological sex rather than gender”.

For everyone’s benefit, sex discrimination laws need to be clear that the terms “sex”, “male”, “female”, “man” and “woman” do not mean “sex as modified by a Gender Recognition Certificate” but biological sex. Our petition sets out a plan for how to do this, and we will be publishing more analysis in the coming weeks.

If you are a UK citizen or resident, please sign the petition today, and share our message wherever you can: on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn, by talking to friends and by forwarding this email.

We will be sharing more campaign materials once we get past 10,000 signatures and will let you know how you can get involved.

Maya Forstater, and all of the Sex Matters team

I think you Scots must feel proud to see that map!

IcakethereforeIam · 03/11/2022 18:01

I signed it yesterday, I think there was another thread. It was only around 1700! Brilliant that it's climbing so fast. Go Maya.

Absolutely! Glorious to see all those colours glowing red with the frustration and anger at people not listening to women’s concerns. This petition is going to help bring yet more sunlight and discussion. Thank you Maya!

Whereareyourshoes · 03/11/2022 19:40

And it’s over 20000 now!

Sazzasez · 03/11/2022 19:45

I’ve enjoyed watching the numbers whizz up. Keep sharing!

Amazed how high up on the list my area is!

Toasty280 · 03/11/2022 19:49

Done

stealtheatingtunnocks · 03/11/2022 19:50

I’m sending it to my MP and 8 MSPs and asking them to sign it. They need clarification to make good decisions

SarahShorty · 03/11/2022 19:54

The Equalities Act 2010 is a Tony Blair creation passed by Gordon Brown and it's one of the many pieces of legislation that I feel never should have seen the light of day.

pink85 · 03/11/2022 19:56

Signed. We cannot let this happen. I hope that map turns red entirely

EndlessTea · 03/11/2022 20:09

It annoys me that the wording of the (hard won) Sex Discrimination Act was appropriated and misapplied to other things.

For example- the wording around harassment at work - women shouldn’t have to put up with degrading things like porn and suggestive comments at work - which cause a hostile, degrading and offensive environment. With the Sex Discrimination Act, a woman would be covered if a bloke turn up in a stereotypical ‘slutty woman’ outfit at work and made over familiar comments about her appearance. It would be considered harassment.

But creating this catch-all Equality Act, that bloke can now accuse the woman of creating a ‘hostile, degrading and offensive’ environment for him, if she doesn’t play along with it.

And even more galling is Stonewall campaigning to remove Sex as a protected characteristic - of the legislation we fought for.

Grin

It's turning red with peri menopausal rage, frankly.

EndlessTea · 03/11/2022 20:45

😂

Signed and shared.

I've signed and sent to key GC friends.

Will get DH to sign and share too.

Ramblingnamechanger · 04/11/2022 00:04

Good to see Leeds NW coming along nicely

stealtheatingtunnocks · 04/11/2022 03:02

I was a bit disappointed with the lack of dark red places - they have changed the scale. Edinburgh South has 0.15% signed. That HAS to be significant?

I don’t know in which way, but that is a lot from a petition which hasn’t had press. The only way people know about it must be either through SM newsletter or WoM?

and MN…Link to map

Tryfull · 04/11/2022 03:09

Thanks for the bump. Are we allowed to share this out of the naughty corner?

stealtheatingtunnocks · 04/11/2022 04:14

I don’t see why not.

Whereareyourshoes · 04/11/2022 09:59

Great to see the numbers still going up.

Ramblingnamechanger · 04/11/2022 17:58

I thought I posted the link to petitions board earlier on AIBU but can’t see it. Anybody else care to have a go?

Newcatbrowntail · 05/11/2022 10:16

I’ve signed and forwarded it onto a friend

It it had press, and everyone in the Uk had to sign anonymously if they agreed, I'm guessing it would be around the 60,000,000 signatures mark.

Ddvmum26 · 05/11/2022 14:35

Bump. My bit of Scotland is only yellow but my MP is reputed to be besties with the Edinburgh Rape Crisis person so perhaps not surprising.
