I seem to have bypassed the whole debacle - he made a documentary that everyone thinks is amazing, but nobody can stand him? What's the deal?

People believe that if you watch his film and like it you must therefore agree with everything he says and does.

QuimReaper · 05/10/2022 23:48

Reunited Confused Can you... give me the DL on what he says and does?

He’s a conservative Christian.

There is a small overlap between him and us and it can be pretty much summed up as ‘there are only two human sexes’ and ‘transing kids and teens is bad’.

Some of the film is good (eg facilitating supposed gender experts showing their crazy on camera, ‘does a chicken have a gender identity?’) and some is lazy and limiting gender stereotypes (his kids dressed in pink and blue and the gendered toys etc) but overall it’s a good contribution to waking more people up to the madness that’s affecting women, and even more so, affecting children.

Can someone give me the DL on Matt Walsh?

Matt Walsh is currently on a mission to shut down the US equivalent of the Tavistock GIDS across the US starting in Tennessee, he is organising a US wide protest movement entitled "The Rally to End Child Mutilation" (MNHQ please do not delete as this is the name of the rally provided for information to OP). He also produced a documentary entitled "What is a woman?" that questions individuals across continents on how they understand the differences between the sexes. He is republican leaning and has a strong Christian faith that informs his activism, he disapproves of abortion, the wider "rainbow agenda" and places his faith at the centre everything he does. Like him or loathe him, he has done a significant amount of work to raise awareness of what is happening in public institutions across the US.

PinkFrogss · 06/10/2022 00:14

He hates feminists, including GC ones, but is happy to profit off their ideas and discussion.

He has said some absolutely disgusting things, and although I dare say I may agree with the odd thing he says, I don’t agree with his intent behind it, and think he arrives at his views from a very different place than I do. He certainly doesn’t care about women’s rights.

FemaleAndLearning · 06/10/2022 00:32

He is one of the directors if the Daily Wire which can be found on you tube. Other presenters are Brett Cooper, Candice Owen, Jordan Peterson and Ben Shapiro. They are anti woke and anti democrats. Ben Shapiro who is Jewish has been called a nazi I believe for some of his views! We enjoy watching the Daily Wire when related to gender identity ideology, the same with Odin's Men on you tube channel.
Because I watch this does not mean I agree with everything these presenters say. Ridiculous I have to state that!

I've only seen bits of What is a woman? But it seems very well done and Matt Walsh is a good interviewer. The interview with the doctor who asks 'do chickens cry' is hilarious as is the female doctor who says woman is what you want it to be but I can't say as I'm not a woman! He goes to an African country and asks the men if a woman can have a penis.

He doesn't mention TERF island and all the amazing work over here, but why would he as he is American centric.

Delphinium20 · 06/10/2022 00:45

American man. Knows what a woman is and made a film about it. Also believes that 12-year-old rape victims should carry their pregnancies to term. Gender critical. Not pro-woman.

MangyInseam · 06/10/2022 01:54

He's a Catholic, specifically, of the American variety. Not an evangelical.

rabbitwoman · 06/10/2022 06:53

Matt Walsh is gender critical from a different direction to many people on here, I think.

But I also get a vibe from matt that if me and him sat down and had a discussion about feminism more broadly, and the abortion issue specifically, we would disagree vehemently but still be able to remain civil and part with respect, if not actual friends.

This has proven not possible within the gender debate with people who disagree.

Signalbox · 06/10/2022 07:21

I wouldn’t say that Matt Walsh is Gender Critical. He believes that there are only 2 biological sexes and that sex is immutable but his film would suggest that he’s pro specific gender roles for women and girls (girls in pink women in the kitchen needing help with opening jars). There is no critique of gender as a concept in his film.

TheClogLady · 06/10/2022 07:48

He’s ‘transgender critical’ rather than ‘gender critical’.

Helleofabore · 06/10/2022 08:07

I don’t think of him as ‘gender critical’. It is almost like he needs another term because I don’t think he is out to abolish gender stereotypes or oppression of females.

He is a persistent disrupter though. As in he will pull threads and not back down. He went on the Dr Phil show as someone who questioned gender identity and maintained his composure and direction in the face of inane answers.

But no. He is no friend of feminists. Nor does he need to be, he has a huge platform and a specific following. He plays to that specific audience.

However, he IS part of the debate where if you said you liked his video and agreed with some of his opinions, people declared you were ‘aligning’ with whatever he is.

Which is just part of this tribalism that seems to be part of some parts of society. The extreme trans activists use it and have been trying to use it to align us with far right for a long time. I find it disheartening to see it happening within this particular movement though where some feminists feel the need to shame others for approving of content because of who made it or said it.

Then again, as DJ Lippy reminds us, there has always been separatists in feminism.

WahineToa · 06/10/2022 08:23

He’s really not worth troubling yourself finding out about, bit like the overrated Peterson. These guys are not that interesting and just happen to also believe that biological sex is real.

TheClogLady · 06/10/2022 08:36

It’s always worth finding out the answers to questions you are curious about.

It only takes a few minutes of listening to Walsh/Peterson/Whoever to decide if you are interested in listening further.

Outsourcing our (general our!) opinions to others is a big contributor to the tribalism that results in horrors children’s charity appointing a Paedo-adjacent-academic.

Perfectly OK to conclude Walsh is a big bag of dicks after listening though!

Helleofabore · 06/10/2022 08:36

Here is a clip from that Dr Phil show.

I think people perhaps respond to seeing his directness which is refreshing after years of being kind and pretzeling our words.

I disagree though that he is not worth finding out about. Because he seems to come up on threads here often enough. It is always good to know who is doing what.

Helleofabore · 06/10/2022 08:38

Careful clog. We have been cross posting enough in the past 24 hours that it might cause waves in the six people and many sock puppets theory!

TheClogLady · 06/10/2022 08:42

I can’t phone type that fast!

I swear I’m getting arthritis in my thumbs…

What a load of nonsense.

I found out what Matt Walsh was about precisely because I troubled myself about it. Same with Jordan Peterson. I can't stand Walsh and,can only take JP in small doses and I don't agree with everything he says, but he is doing a lot to shine a light on gender ideology in the States.

No offence OP, why don't you go find out what Walsh says directly from the source himself and make up your own mind, rather than asking here?

MintyFreshOne · 06/10/2022 08:59

His views are informed by his conservative Catholicism. He of course thinks the feminist movement is a huge mistake.

It plays well in America and he’s an important voice in the fight against trans ideology, he makes good points and worth watching while
keeping in mind his background (eg obviously he’s going to be anti-abortion)

AlisonDonut · 06/10/2022 09:07

You can't read the USA in the same way as the UK as the religion aspect is totally overwhelming whenever you delve into the USA and the influence that this has on American. You just cannot compare the two.

Matt Walsh stands for pretty much everything that I don't - in every way. Apart from a belief in biological sex but his angle is about gender roles being crucial whereas I am all about gender roles needing to be broken down.

However the USA is so totally captured, it is going to take these religious people to take it down, and people like him will be the ones to do it. Remember the effect that the medical system over there has and the billions that the medical companies will be getting for the many surgical procedures and drugs that will be needed if this ideology is not haulted.

He will never ever credit the women whose work he is ripping off, as he doesn't respect women so they don't need recognising for their work [they should be in the kitchen so it's only due to a man allowing them to do the research in the first place would be his take on the women that he has stolen his best lines from].

But if that's what it takes to try and stop the mess in the USA then that's good, whilst also being bad, because the likes of Matt would want to do it in order to have more young women for men to impregnant and that's probably why it is so prevalent in the first place. I'd be running from men like this if I was a teenage girl in the USA.

It's a dilemma that's for sure but do feel free to do your own research on the topic. It cannot be unpicked in a simple explanation as there is none.

beastlyslumber · 06/10/2022 21:14

I like Matt Walsh. I disagree with quite a lot of what he says, but he's funny, with a very dry sense of humour. What is a Woman? is a great documentary, well worth a watch. He explains his motivations as ultimately caring about the truth. He was interviewed on Triggernometry - also worth a watch.

DW has some good presenters. Matt Walsh, Ben Shapiro, Candace Owens. All are entertaining and interesting to listen to.

I really like Jordan Peterson too, although I haven't seen any of his DW stuff. His conversation with Helen Joyce recently was very good.

Anyway, just wanted to say it's okay to like people and listen to them even if you don't agree with all or even much of what they have to say. It won't hurt you to go on youtube and just have a look.

MangyInseam · 07/10/2022 14:33

I wouldn't say that Walsh thinks that gender roles are "crucial."

I would say that he thinks mothers and fathers tend to have different roles, that there are behavioural differences between male and female populations, and it's not necessarily wrong for society to have some of these things normalized. Though I am pretty sure he also things some things of that nature are negative. He might be for mums staying home with young kids (and being supported financially to do so), for example, I don't think he believes women should never work or be educated, on the other.

Most of those are actually common views in terms of the big picture. He would I suspect draw a different line than many people who aren't religious conservatives, but not a different kind of line, if that makes sense.

A purist GC position that says that everything but the most basic reproductive elements are socialized only, or that men and women should play exactly the same roles as parents, that all gendered social conventions like clothing should go away, is more common on the boards here, but it's actually an outlier position in terms of the population.
