A woman is being sued for being disabled

Hugocat1 · 05/10/2022 11:10

There is a thread over in chat about it now. There are a few women on Twitter I’d love to send this over too but I’ve been banned for a week 🥴

Cant find anything on Google so doesn’t look like the newspapers have picked it up yet.

Where can we get this women support?

Besides the fact it’s absolutely outrageous disgusting and she may lose her home- I think the lawyers who have picked it up are just looking to dismantle the equality act.

We know what happens once that falls.

It seems to be an orchestrated attack on the Equality Acts of Ireland (where this woman is based) and of the UK. According to one of her videos there is someone else in the UK being sued by guests in the same way, and who are being funded by the same group.

Very worrying.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/10/2022 11:58

I'd like to see the details of the case in the U.K. If Air BNB victimise people for their disability in the U.K. they can be subject to a discrimination case under the Equality Act 2010.

I have no idea how Irish law works.

Hoardasurass · 05/10/2022 11:59

As they haven't issued court proceedings yet there is nothing to be done and if they are stupid enough to do so it will be thrown straight out of court as being disabled is a protected characteristic of the equality act whilst claiming to have a self diagnosed mental health issue is not.
Also remember that even if this person does somehow manage to claim that they have a mental health disability they are only allowed to expect reasonable adjustments which they were offered but refused and that they didn't ask for these adjustments in advance or check if the premises were suitable for themselves so again no case to answer.
The poor woman on the other hand has a good claim against them for disability discrimination harassment and victimisation.
If the allegation that this woman was assaulted by the "guest " is correct that could very easily be given a hate crime aggregated enhancement.

Igmum · 05/10/2022 12:07

It's reassuring reading the comments on here. I certainly hope it is thrown out, and quickly. No one, least of all a dying woman, should be put through this. But who TF are these people trying to dismantle the Equality Act?

ControversialOpening · 05/10/2022 12:07

I can’t find the thread - could somebody link to it please?

Yes I agree, on all your points

FunnyTalks · 05/10/2022 12:31

Just watched the video. Absolutely disgusting behaviour by the guests, and the woman should not have to be put through any of this. I do agree the claim won't get very far though.

Having said that, I have done a lot of work around people with disabilities and it is shocking how much discrimination they face.

BordoisAgain · 05/10/2022 12:35

I saw one of this woman's videos on tiktok but couldn't find the whole story.

I cant believe how outrageous it actually is 😲

Hugocat1 · 05/10/2022 13:04

I’ve not seen anything on Twitter about it. I’m appalled that some human being thinks this is something ok to do to a dying women! Absolute bastards!

Who the hell are the lobby group? I’m sure the when it breaks in Twitter someone will find out.

Fucks sakes. Already someone on that other thread is trying to make it about Another Group. This is an attack on the rights of disabled people.

Maybe it shouldn't be possible to put an individual in the position where they have to find the funding and defend themselves in court unless the claimant is willing to put up a sum of money to pay costs and compensate them in the event they lose.

BirdinaHedge · 05/10/2022 13:23

According to one of her videos there is someone else in the UK being sued by guests in the same way, and who are being funded by the same group.

What is the name of the group? Her posting said the scammers wanted to establish a hierarchy of protected characteristics. It's one of the features of the UL Equalities Act that there is NO hierarchy

delilahhey · 06/10/2022 22:46

and in a twist to the tale, the woman claiming this happened in the videos is a scam artist - previously convicted - real name Samantha Cooke… of course we don’t know if she is actually disabled / living with Huntingtons, but WOW

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 07/10/2022 00:57

My partner and I just spent two hours talking about this! It was a bit of a wild ride because I started off saying “if it’s real it’s horrific but I am getting Jussie Smollet vibes” and then I had to explain Jussie Smollet to him and then I looked her up on KiwiFarms to see if they had uncovered anything (no, they missed this one) so I had to explain KiwiFarms to him too, and the recent foiled attempts by TRAs to censor the whole Internet, and then we found all this woman’s
articles about Huntington’s and accessibly software and we got to the point of “huh, it seems a bit odd that she recovered her speech so miraculously well when Huntington’s is a progressive neurodegenerative condition…” and meanwhile my partner was making all these very obvious points about the AirBnB story that somehow everyone forgot to think about, like “but why did she lock herself in the kitchen overnight? Why not in her BEDROOM?” and “it just looks like a NORMAL DOORBELL” and getting almost aggrieved about how none of it made any sense, and I don’t think I helped that much by giving him KiwiFarms, Keffals and Jussie Smollet to process in the same conversation.

and then we clicked on to the Mumsnet thread and got the big con artist reveal live while we were still talking about it, which was most satisfactory.

anyway, my partner would make a great but somewhat annoying detective, and I am too online. And this story was bollocks.

Omg your poor DH bringing Jussie Smollet into it! Then Kiwi farms. That was cruel. Mind you ,he's got amazing detective mental skills still managing to stay on track and unravel that this woman was talking BS while you were overloading him with info.

You ought to show him the Dave Chappelle skit on Jussie Smollet, it's on YouTube, it's hilarious if you haven't seen it already!

Glad to say I wasn't wholly taken in by this woman's story....but I was halfway there, and that's purely because I now live in a world where a man can supposedly give birth and join the women's sports teams, and change sex by uttering words, so everything else seems feasible by comparison of being just a shade slightly less looney.

It's madness. Literally.

Yes, me too. If you look on the other thread you'll see I was mildly sceptical but really even the most sceptical people moderated their feelings that it was bullshit until it was confirmed, because so many people in the thread truly believed in it. I think it's quite telling that it didn't get too much traction in FWR because I think we are more inclined to question, but this seemed mean to question so people just stayed away.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/10/2022 02:27

And yes I also thought, "my doorbell flashes when you ring it and it isn't special"

PrunellaMcTat · 07/10/2022 02:31

This case is not straightforward.
Someone is making the point that the guests self-identifying as mentally unwell takes precedence over her reality of being disabled. Somebody is making a parallel.

Yes I should have stuck to FWR, because it did strike me as slightly strange that it didn't pull much discussion on this board. But I hushed my intuition down because so many people believed it and it just wouldn't have been the craziest thing I've heard by a long shot anymore.

Same here!

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 07/10/2022 12:40

To be fair the AirBnB part gave it some initial credibility and momentum. It was hard to understand why AirBnB didn’t just deny saying the things they were accused of.

There must have been a real incident where AirBnB were working from different (and more accurate) information about whatever happened between her and the guests, but even so it seems likely that a confused customer service person did say something foolish that would have been insensitive to a disabled person.

It was very interesting, too, how many different culture war buttons she was mashing to get a reaction. She obviously borrowed the shadowy “anti-woke” Christian Right boogeyman funders from the TRAs. And all her talk about the UK Equality Act was presumably borrowed from the trans debate too. But then the colouring books and weighted blankets demanded by the evil lawsuit people for their trauma seemed designed to annoy Daily Mail readers.

I will definitely do this, thank you! And I’ll pass on to him what you said about his ability to keep it all straight, though I might just pretend it’s my compliment!

ZealAndArdour · 07/10/2022 12:42

Who are the group funding the legal action? Are they anonymous? It’s not the Christian Legal Centre again is it?

It's very likely there is no group and no legal action.
