I was so shocked that they put breast amputation post op(with the person in question still clearly not conscious/aware on top of that). That was so sad and brutal to watch I can’t even begin to explain how bizarre it was that they were trying to sell it as success story-ESPECIALLY after the person in question said there were complications that need to be resolved with another surgery/ies that are basically not covered by same group that funded the breast amputation, meaning this patient will be in big debt. As someone mentioned in previous threads, I started hating this show with Tan basically boasting he used a woman to buy himself a baby and Jonathan with his nonbinary beer gut crop tops. Also in that very episode, there are”transmen”dancing topless in club at the end of the show, showing scars of breast removal. This was so sad to watch. You could see these gay men would never ever consider them as love interest and they know 99% of other gay men wouldn’t either still they were sitting there being like”yeah”with a sour face. Just gross. I love all kinds of transformation shows so I started binge watching Queer Eye and honestly the old version(available on Amazon Prime)gave me life at moments, like they were genuinely funny(I mean Carson just LOL)tho the more episodes they did, the more misogyny was revealing too. I believe they had one”transman”too and they also didn’t look impressed either but as I said this, showing that surgery of removing healthy tissue off a woman struggling was just really incomparable.

What were some bits and episodes that stood out to you that you were like”oh no hunty, no pasaran”?

That's a good question, as I no longer watch it either because of Tan and JVN.

Think I vaguely remember this episode but wouldn't have really been watching it through a full GC lens at that point. Was there a trans pastor or something? Thought it was quite insightful at the time, but that was ages ago I miss lovely Antoni

I did used to love JVN and his whole 'getting curious' schtick until it became clear that it didn't extend so far as to listening to women at all. Tan hijacking world breastfeeding week to schill for formula was utterly disgusting.

Miscfeminista · 11/08/2022 12:32

@WolverineBluey omg what episode was that when Tan crashes breastfeeding week?? I think I watched all there is at this point but I missed this 🤢

Re trans pastor; not that I have seen, I only remember gay pastor, “transwoman”powerlifter and around 30 yo red haired”transman”Skylar(described in OP). I gave up at one point too then I was like to hell with that I already seen 80% I might finish what’s left

Some of what you say doesn't come across very well. People should be free to dress how they want without being shamed for having beer guts I'm sure plenty of biological women who wear crop tops also don't have 100% flat stomachs.

I fully get that the guys probably wouldn't have considered the trans men as potential lovers, but I still don't see the issue with them cheering them on while dancing. Should we only cheer people on if we find them sexually attractive?

Ultimately, whatever your or my thoughts on trans people are and the wider issues, with regards to that specific scene, those people made a choice themselves to do that to their bodies and clearly feel happier afterwards so why shouldn't the guys be happy for them?

This was the episode that did it for me and I stopped watching. It was awful, the person was clearly vulnerable while going through surgery and it felt intrusive, but also I was so dismayed that Karamo and Bobby (my faves) were all "ooh it's your true self" blah blah - I still struggle to believe Karamo, who is all about genuine self-acceptance and gay masculinity, really really thinks a woman can become a man. Whether he really does or he just thinks he has to say that, I was disappointed, because I felt he was exactly the type of person who would have (perhaps privately) asked "is this change really what you need or could you accept yourself as a proud GNC woman?"

And QE used to be so good when it was about one specific thing – lovable but clueless straight men being helped by gay men to revamp their style and home. It was fun and genuine. Now it's not because I can't think that these successful, high-status gay men really think TMAM who they would actually date, so it feels fake.

Ah here we go, apparently I wrote something”wrong”. Only thing I can think of is”transphobia”and”misgendering”as I didn’t use derogatory words toward anyone or generally any insults, simply addressed the person in OP on basis of sex. Whatever.

I completely agree @BlossomsOnATree , when I watched original show it’s not like misogyny didn’t start to seep in but at least they were honest with men about how gross they are acting and how they need to clean up and not make their woman partner do it and all. Ted was even disgusted with finding porn in their houses for gods sake, he was more progressive than the woke group they gathered in this new one

There was also Angel, the trans powerlifter from season six. Featuring a lot of thinly disguised propaganda about trans kids in sports (and no honest examination of the issues it might raise). Angel competes in a federation with an open category, I think, which wasn’t made explicit in the programme, presumably lest it reveal that TW are not actually excluded from sport following transition.

They were all obsessed with Angel and Van Ness still pals around with Angel back in Texas. All slightly weird - I felt like they were slightly in awe of Angel as though Angel was some superior being with additional cachet.

'That's a good question, as I no longer watch it either because of Tan and JVN'

I used to love this show but had to ditch it because of these two. Tan posing topless with an ultrasound scan over his abdomen to announce their surrogate pregnancy was just revolting.

MrsJamin · 11/08/2022 16:43

I can't watch this anymore either, Tan's surrogacy and JVN's insistence that he is non-binary were just too much to ignore.

Miscfeminista · 11/08/2022 20:51

Ok I seriously need to go and dig that horrid scene with Tan now.

Oh and has anyone seen the original Queer Eye reunion(also Amazon Prime)? They did a makeover for Jai who seemed to be in mid life crisis. It was actually nice to see them but then of course, they get a drag queen at the end(spoiler: Jai was doing drag for years, I thought he had some hope because I remembered he was disgusted with Kyan telling some kid they’re taking him to brothel as a surprise. A”joke”you know 🙄 generally he seemed very nice). And I recently saw Carson was in full support of trans ideas(obviously, I guess it goes along with being on RuPaul)so yeah. I guess as he said, it was different times. If they were shooting now, they would sell same BS as the new fab guys

OP posts:
Miscfeminista · 11/08/2022 20:55

To add; if you look up now, Jai has actually been keeping his makeover up, he looks really good. I wish they revisited all of these people they did makeovers for, only one of them came for Jai’s party in that reunion show and he said he let himself go basically and has to do it all over again now(I guess like a message to Jai to get going)

OP posts:
WolverineBluey · 11/08/2022 22:34

Sorry, Tan did that in real life not on the show. Very shortly after the surrogacy.

Miscfeminista · 12/08/2022 00:54

Oh ok. Equally horrible. I remember him in the show being like”oh don’t worry about having a baby, you can just have a surrogate, mine is coming next year”and I was like 🥴 ooookk. To remember how limited my movement and life was during pregnancy(and well after)and then seeing him walking around carefree like he ordered special furniture from overseas just reminds you how blatant these people are about buying themself a baby. Just so entitled.

OP posts:
AtrociousCircumstance · 12/08/2022 01:00

Yeah so gutting, this once lovely show became riddled with misogynistic propaganda.

Miscfeminista · 12/08/2022 03:32

then there’s another video where he reads a comment saying why they used a woman’s body to”have a child”and Tan literally says nothing. I thought point of reading these opposing comments was to”enlighten the wrongthinker”(people opposing surrogacy)but he just stares at screen like a sad pup. “People should pick which way they want to have kids”..ok and, that’s all? No concern about ethics or the woman or the big business that surrogacy is? I guess we were supposed to be endeared how two gay men decided they’ll buy a baby shortly after they just met. Not. They really just don’t give a f, amazing 👍 so much about their research before thinking of having children

They’ve been nominated for an Emmy for the episode with Angel. Rather revealingly Karamo just put a reel on his Instagram talking about how Angel was their “first transgender hero”, and had to be reminded by a lot of people that Skylar the transman was their first. Cue a scrambling correction to say that he meant first transwoman.
