Fantastic article on the closing of the GIDS at the Tavistock- who else is responsible, and should there be a public enquiry?

Excellent article though the once again reading the details of what GIDS have been doing is horrifying.
In one of the comments someone asks how to trigger a public enquiry to which Dennis provides this helpful link:

Perhaps one for Kemi Badenoch?

LunaLights · 04/08/2022 00:33

That title really sums it up in a spectacularly horrific way…

MishyJDI · 04/08/2022 10:03

With regret rates at around 1%, and further GIDs being set up to allow children presenting with gender variations to be seen earlier, I don't even begin to see how the hyperbole of GIDS being describe as an "abattoir" by non medical/psych arm chair experts with axes to grind is appropriate. Let's see how the new GIDs operate - hopefully it will speed up timelines for gender variant kids and differing treatment options once they have been fully assessed.

Where do you get your neat little percentages from? I doubt it's from any reliable source.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 04/08/2022 12:47

Some people seem to regard children being ushered down a pathway that leads to surgical sterilisation as some kind of ‘win’

it’s an incredibly worrying mindset

TheFeistyFeminist · 04/08/2022 12:50

I'd like to see the independently verified evidence basis for your statement that the regret rate is around 1% - I suspect that's unreliable wishful thinking as one of the key failings of the Tavistock was that it didn't follow up at all.

Any regional clinics set up as a result are going to have to learn from the mistakes the Tavistock made and I sincerely hope that the direct result of this will be that we stop rushing vulnerable young people into a medicalised pathway that does irreparable damage to their bodies and their minds, when instead what they need is space and time to explore how their feelings develop through adolescence. If, and only if, the settled adult status is gender identity distress, then further treatment may well be considered clinically appropriate.

Johnnysgirl · 04/08/2022 12:51

That poster has form. That they've accused others of having "axes to grind" is fairly ironic.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 04/08/2022 12:53

In 2018 Dr. Bell warned in an uncompromising internal report that GIDS was providing “woefully inadequate” care and that some staff had “very serious ethical concerns” about the children using the service making irreversible and life changing decisions with “inadequate” examination of underlying comorbidities and consent

are you happy for example @MishyJDI that the Tavistock always thoroughly explored all issues faced by the children there before prescribing them puberty blockers (which have a proven affect on bone density, potential loss of vision and IQ)?

Keira Bell, Dr David Bell and Sonia Appleby say no. What do you say?

Signalbox · 04/08/2022 12:57

Nobody believes this any more. Even Gender GP says 3% and acknowledge that the facts and statistics are "hard to come by". Nobody dares to do any research in case they ruin their reputation /career. Hopefully the research being done off the back of the Cass Review will put an end to this ridiculous statistic being quoted once and for all.

Absolutely diverging here, but while looking for info on the 1% above found an article on the current 76 genders.... and now thinking of declaring mine on forms as Gender Outlaw...
"Gender outlaw
A person who identifies as a gender outlaw refuses to allow society’s definition of “male” or “female” to define them."

Also known as a pathetic, ineffectual farty, trying to be all rebellious in declaring they're too special to be "defined" as a man or a woman.

As big an outlaw as the Milky Bar Kid. Yawn.

OldCrone · 04/08/2022 15:14

What is a 'gender variant kid' @MishyJDI ? Is it a child who doesn't conform to gender stereotypes?

RightsHoardingRaptor · 04/08/2022 15:42

@MishyJDI the 1% rate was taken is not right. Have a listen to Gender: A wider lens. Stella O'Malley explains why it is not right and why it is dangerous to push this statistic. I can't think what episode it was, one of the last few

RightsHoardingRaptor · 04/08/2022 15:44

I think it was this one
