A good day for women

I know we still have a way to go. And many things to come up against - and thanks to all those who have kept pushing on these things

But with women winning yesterday and likely a female PM I’m feeling happy today

Women commanding huge crowds, excitement and playing a fantastic to watch game

Truss has all the top male MPs lending their support and it was not done in a forced short list way but naturally. Whether you dislike her politics - which is up to you - it’s a step forward for women

plus a lot of the tide turning on TWAW stuff

Keep going but a positive thread maybe

I'm not particulary excited about Truss as PM - it's the glass cliff all over again, she'll fail and be excoriated as a dreadful PM and because she's a woman, it'll be seen by some as a sign of why female PMs are bad. She's not likely to be doing anything for women, as RW women tend to get to positions of power by being male chauvenists themselves and downplaying the real issues women face.

The football is great, I hope it might bring about some long-term improved take up of sport among girls and proper respect for women's sport in general.

Women suffered with having Maggie t as prime minister - it helped the myth that any successful women must be a monster

Having a female pm isn't necessarily a good thing for women or the country and I have no respect for LT - in terms of actions rather than words - Northern Ireland vs furlough

achillestoes · 01/08/2022 10:01

‘Women suffered with having Maggie t as prime minister - it helped the myth that any successful women must be a monster’

The expectation that a female PM will be ‘nicer’ than a male PM, and the inevitable backlash when she turns out to be as likely or unlikely to be particularly ‘nice’ as a man, is sexist.

Internalised misogyny anyone?

I can't tell if you mean that a man would not make mistakes (women must be perfect to rule)
Or if you are saying that it is better to have a terrible male pm than any female pm.
I can't understand why the male pm's mistakes is not bad for men as a whole but the female pm's mistakes reflects badly on all women?

TheGreatATuin · 01/08/2022 11:33

By this logic, we could say that having Boris as a male PM wasn't a good thing for men or the country. He wasn't a good thing because he was rubbish, not because he was a man.
I disagree with Liz Truss on a lot of things, same as pretty much every Tory, but if she does a shit job, then blame her for doing a shit job, same as Boris, but don't bring her sex into it. Women shouldn't be held to higher standards than men.

Or perhaps we could wait until there's anything like actual parity in male/female presentation in UK Parliament? Hmm

I'm also happy that Tories have found their backbone on this issue, in large part to women organising, campaigning, writing to MPs and fundraising for court cases.

Liz Truss is fully across her brief on this, and will likely be good for women, ably assisted by Kemi. So I'm happy she looks like a front-runner, as Labour will be less likely to accuse her of misogyny in policies required to turn this tanker around.

Further on reasons to celebrate: I want to say well done women on this board, you and those (unfairly) banned have kept going, and talking, and the tide is, finally, seems to be turning! ❤️💐

Nevertheless, she persisted Star

LK1972 · 01/08/2022 11:57

@JosephineGH 'Why should we expect or want parity?'

Why not?

Pluvia · 01/08/2022 12:09

I think you're discounting the interior workings of the Tory Party, or the pressure that will have been brought to bear by BJ's still influential supporters to ahem, encourage, MPs to come out in favour of Truss. Boris has the backing of some extremely wealthy businesspeople who think they'll be better off with Truss than Sunak.

Very true, but not necessarily a reason to remove short-lists, is it?

There is a bit of discussion to be had about advantages/disadvantages of all-women shortlists, in all circumstances, no?

the winter soldier · 01/08/2022 12:26

We have this discussion at work where people say 'it shouldn't matter what sex they are it should be the best person for the job' and then no one is surprised when the person appointed is a straight white middle class non-disabled male.

midgetastic · 01/08/2022 12:38

It's not internalised mysogeny

Just because someone is female doesn't mean I have to support them - I disagree with her actions on Northern Ireland

And I am simply reporting what happened - men in particular used MT 's evilness as a reason to dismiss all women - "look what happened when you let a women lead " is an attitude I had to suffer

Doesn't matter if men are worse.

Right I see what you mean but we can't refrain from putting a woman forward just because some men are short-sighted...
That'll mean we're living in their bubble... permanently.
Sounds stifling.

MarshaBradyo · 01/08/2022 15:20

I find some of the narrative around Thatcher out dated now - which Labour MP said recently something about her not being a real woman? Madness and out of date

I don’t actually agree the glass cliff applies here. Sunak would love the job, Starmer would love to have a chance to go for it too

Truss is ahead in the polls though - and all those make MPs Wallace, Zahawi, Tugendhat, probably others are now backing her due to the lead

It’s not something men are saying they don’t want, they do, Sunak is just not polling as well
