A very hard to read article in the Times today ‘If I’d known war was coming, I’d never have become a surrogate’

Good comments though

Nice bit of unclear, woman-erasing (ie gender-neutral) language in that article.

"^They will be recorded as the
legal parent at birth^"

At first reading, ' they' being a plural, it reads like the commissioners are recorded as the parents, but the rest of the sentence is then ungrammatical.

Why on earth did the writer not simply state 'she will be recorded as the legal mother at birth'?

Surrogacy is an abhorrent practice and I wish it was outlawed worldwide. What a dreadfuk state of affairs when people can commission young women to put their lives, health and future fertility at risk. That's before you even start on the specific issues for Ukrainian surrogate mothers.

I'm updating this thread with this article in the Times from Saturday (22nd April)

"Alona, 26, who is five months pregnant, said she didn’t know the names of the British couple whose child she was carrying. “I like that I can help them find happiness,” she said. “And of course financially it is good too.”
