So someone I've never heard of before, who boasts 193.6K followers, a self professed fiction writer and science nerd wrote a scolding tweet. "If you don't like inclusive language, think of it as being respectful. You're using the terms the other person prefers, as you would w / a nickname. If you still don't like THAT - well, what you're admitting is that you don't respect the other person. Maybe think on that."

Naturally there has been some pushback.

So she has come up with a winning idea, truly inspired:

"Better idea: for every transphobic, bad faith, or generally douches comment on this thread, I'll be donating $1 to a trans rights organisation. Knock yourself out transphobic."

So far it's cost her $374

The game is on!

What's that saying about not being able to tell fact from fiction?
Are science nerd and fiction writer incompatible?

Makes me think of that gamer who raised huge numbers for Mermaids.
I always wonder whether these people are ever going to look back and realise with horror what they've done.

Celeste Ng wrote Little Fires Everywhere, she’s great writer, so this is a shame to see.

FannyCann · 06/07/2022 21:09

I think the game got donations from supporters? In this case she's paying herself!

Gutted, I loved little fires everywhere

GrouchyKiwi · 06/07/2022 22:22

DH points out that, if "women are a subset of birthing people" then transwomen are not women, because all women are birthing people (but not all birthing people are women). So. Oops, Celeste?

NotBadConsidering · 06/07/2022 22:25

If she’s not even reading the “transphobic” comments, how does she know they’re transphobic?

FannyCann · 06/07/2022 22:37

Yes it has occurred to me that either she or a minion will have to read all the comments and count them up, sorted into "transphobic" "bad faith" "generally douchey" and approved tweets. Then do the maths. Someone will have to read all those mean comments or she won't know. 🤷‍♀️

Huh, why would I want more funding to a group I probably wouldn’t agree with?

FannyCann · 06/07/2022 22:57

Well I guess the joke is on her if it ends up costing her a lot 🤷‍♀️

I'm always curious when someone has tried to opt out of a group like a trans man has attempted to opt out of being referred to as a woman what do they make of inclusive language like "women and other birthing people", its clear that the phrase "other birthing people " is because they are still female biologically. I think if I was a trans man I would want people just to say women so that I could live with the fantasy if I had chosen the attempted opt out of being in that group. Do you think you would want to be included or would you prefer the fantasy that you had changed your sex?

Conflictedunicorn · 07/07/2022 06:54

its Odd that the words woman and mother are ‘triggering’ but giving birth which is a solely female experience is not. If you are choosing to live ‘as a man’, surely you would not get pregnant if you could possibly help it. I can understand abortion and rape services using this language as females are sometimes not pregnant voluntarily, but maternity services are different. Why not just go with the word female. If people want to separate sex and gender just females.

ChagSameachDoreen · 07/07/2022 08:56

Not Celeste Ng!

Noooo. Just as Bette and Mach go up in my estimations, she falls spectacularly.

I miss the days before it was possible to discover that your heroes/heroines were idiots.

I thought Little Fires Everywhere was sitting on a good intention, but horribly executed.

I feel this stunt is much the same!

Eatingchips · 07/07/2022 09:13

I’m finding the “Karen” angle on little fires everywhere so overwritten and not true to life. Not that there aren’t tonnes and tonnes of racist women in the world but they don’t act like that character.

In the last week I have seen three different trans men on Twitter saying that they don't like 'women and other pregnant people' etc. because adding the word 'women' 'triggers' them. When people ask if just 'women' would be all right they say it is worse. It must be total erasure of the female sex, otherwise they feel poorly.

I noticed this because what I like has zero importance, and what others like me prefer has zero importance. Only some people's feelings count now. The people whose feelings count are at most a few percent of all female people.

And that is the curious bit, because it's exactly the same in US when the end of Roe is discussed. In 2017 six abortions out of ten thousand were performed on the group of trans men and female nonbinary people, but the importance of erasing the words for the remaining 99.94% cannot even be discussed.

BlackForestCake · 07/07/2022 16:18

I’d rather she spent the money on ice cream or something than have it go to some organisation that campaigns against women.

This is how you know it's a men's rights movement, nothing to do with women. There's no fucking way that six women have managed to erase great swathes of language for the entire rest of the population.

It's laughable. The idea that the whole world is listening to pregnant women.
